Ah, Stanley Unwin. Always a favourite of mine David.
Who was the man that imitated the sounds of wheels passing over rail joints. Was he a reverend gentleman? I have searched but I can't find him....

Re: Old fashioned clean jokes
Awful these unsolved quests. I've been trying to find a chap who can parody any language. You really as a non native, think he is speaking German or Italian when he just spouts rubbish. I heard him once but no further trace.
I thought it might be Donald Flanders - but seems not. Found this though- very pleasant.
Especially as I lived in Blandford Forum for a quite while. My regular barber Reggie Legge was on the council and told me they agreed in haste, to add the 'Forum' to the name Blandford at the end of a very long meeting - when it was touch and go whether they made it to the pub before closing time. Seems there was some regret next day when they realised the full cost for changing all the signage, stationery etc.
PS I'm getting carried away now - if only it would stop raining. . .

A naked man broke into our local church, the police chased him around for a while and eventually caught him by the organ...

Where have you been? It was intentional - that's how he spoke.

Big Kev
I nearly posted that joke a while back, but I thought better not to.
Wish I had now.

It's just one of those silly jokes that made me chuckle. I find that kind of word play amusing.

Re: Old fashioned clean jokes
My cousin is walking a section of the South Wales coast path, 14 miles yesterday in the rain and wind. But she kept her sense of humour and sent us this photo of a garden gate she saw, I think in Ferryside, south of Carmarthen...
They must all be a bit grumpy there. She turned up to catch the ferry boat across the estuary but there was no-one there, just a notice saying something like `You must be joking if you expect us to go out in this weather'. Then she went to a shop and there was a big notice outside the door saying `No shit shoes in here'. (All these notices are in English, not Welsh, so you can guess who they're aimed at.)

Re: Old fashioned clean jokes
Peter, Love it! That's the sort of thing I would put on a gate. Amazing how many people don't close them. I wonder why they think we made them with hinges?
David will be delighted to hear that I have tracked down the diddly da man. He was called Reginald Gardiner and here's the Wikipedia article about him. (LINK)
Even better, here's the Youtube video of his recording being played... .
Enjoy!

Re: Old fashioned clean jokes
I agree Peter. I was thinking that the BBC only played it once but then I read the Wikipedia article again.
"Gardiner recorded a curious and eccentric classic called "Trains", which was regularly played on the 1950s British radio programme Children's Favourites."
That must have been the very early 1950s because in 1953 I left home and my radio listening was almost zero until the late 1950s because of farm work and National Service. So the memory is only 70 years old....
