They are closed and have no split as a normal piston ring would have.

Ingenious Maz but Eileen and Ian got there in the end. They are blanks I made for piston rings for the 3£ LP cylinder on the big compound I made. They didn't get used and that's why they have no gaps.

a guess, it would appear to have a worm driving a worm wheel, so holding the point in a centre hole of a revolving shaft you could measure off some length / distance etc ?

Sorry Eileen no. Gloria and Bodge have got it between them. It's a rev counter and The numbers are on the other side. It's seized up unfortunately after getting rusty in an old workshop I bought. You held it in the centre mark on a shaft and counted the number of revs it indicated over a known time. Back to the thinking corner!

No he doesn't squeak Cath but Eileen has got it. He sometimes played a trombone in the adverts for butter, I can't remember which brand it was but he was on a par with the Meercats for a long time.

That's it Eileen! The lady who did the voice over used to say "Not Now Douglas!" as she swiped him out of shot at the end of the ad.
Am working out what to do next.... It gets harder, probably a good mental exercise for me!

Funny thing is that I'm not sure. It was posted on the old site by someone. I think I'd favour the take away gin theory because we never had a local hunt. Nice to have it so clearly marked! Try this one, a bit more technical....
