Is it the iron frame on the side? To support a tank which stored rainwater collected from the roof.

You've all got it. It's the Park Road surgery as it looked 30 years ago, Forgotten Corners really but it seemed worth posting. I shall have another think.....
(Yes China the frame was to support a rain water tank and was cast by Bracewell's foundry in Burnley.)

Wow, that's a new one on me. I can't understand why I've never heard of it before. I'm sure I'd have been poking around there in my childhood if I'd known about it.

It was up the Lenches China, there was a railway or tram track to haul the coal into the town, it shows on this slightly blurred map.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS

Thanks for the map. I used to live near there on Atkinson Street and we used to laik around up that clough, without knowing the mine was there. We've even been through what must have been the rail tunnel although it was just a stream in a tunnel to us. It had a double bend in it and we used to think it was scary in the dark section. Further downstream (towards Waterside) the stream went through an iron pipe about three feet diameter and we used to crawl through that to access "Bluebell woods" and the upper tunnel. We never gave a thought to who built the tunnel or what its purpose was. I have happy memories of that time. :good:

Wendy is quite right, it's the remains of the beam engine house at Fox Clough.

Can’t see it’s size. Is it a rubber cover for a handle?

It's about two inches long Cathy. That's not the right answer but you are on the right track with calling it a cover.
