Was it the one at Skyrethorns Skyreholme Paper Mill fed from a reservoir at higher level? I got mixed up with Skythorns where my granddad lived!

Yes Peter, it's an overshot wheel and in this case I think it was fed from a river at higher level.
Skyreholme, I don't know China but I would imagine yes, there would be a catchment pond at a higher level because there are no streams that I know of in that area that are big enough to function without storage.
That's what it is, now where was it?

I'm waffling again: there were some big wheels associated with ventilation of mines. Cornwall?

No China, not Cornwall. You've seen this before. Clue. This name should trigger your memory... Heinrich Schliemann, the German archaeologist.

I've found the waterwheel on Wikipedia and it's in the USA but no mention of Heinrich Schliemann on the Wikipedia page. (I cheated and used Google reverse image search!)
I won't identify it and leave others to have a try.

I didn't say he was implicated in the wheel, only that his name should lead you to a clue.
So you've found the wheel and it's in the US. Where, and what was special about it?

It’s at the Burden Iron Works in Troy, NY.

Well done Gloria, yes Heinrich Schliemann excavated Troy. That was my clue. Reputed at the time to be the most powerful waterwheel in the world, see THIS for the full story and note that Henry Burden was a Scots immigrant to the US. Not all immigrants are rapists and drug dealers Mr Trump!

From the pattern I would guess at wood turning tools for chess pieces. The Queen's gambit must be having an affect on me

Could very well be used for something like that but I need a more specific answer.... Clue, what sort of machine are they used in and are you sure about wood?
