I think you lot are out to get Stanley..... Yes Wendy, its baleen and was used for stays in corsets. One useful fact, it's often described as 'whalebone', it isn't bone, it's related more closely to whiskers and hair.
Put up the next one?

I know, it's one of our members (Sunray's) site with a run down of the history. Moved from it's original location. I'll not say, let others have a go. :extrawink:

Is it the famous `Barlick Stone' which has the magic property of passing back and forth between Lancashire and Yorkshire via an ancient quantum worm hole?

Definitely a Yorkshire man that tried to escape into Lancashire ignored the instruction not to look back and was turned into stone. He was later recaptured put behind bars and now on display in Letcliffe park as a warning to others.

It's known as Robin Hood's stone and is situated in the Wirral. It's got nothing to do with the bloke with the longbow though.

According to Bing it is in Allerton, Liverpool. I've never noticed it so I don't know who is right.

Right, that was it. I doubt if there is any connection with arrows even, never mind Robin Hood! Glacial erratics often have grooves in them as do rocks they pass over.

There was an article about the conservation and restoration of the Calder stones in a 2019 issue of Current Archaeology magazine. They were taken to London then back again. LINK
