The 'cloth' in the pic looks to be denim. Is it clothing related? A rivet from a pair of jeans or is it bigger than that?

I know what it is and why it's connected with Tolkien. A related species has been in the news here because the first one in the UK was found in Surrey recently and it's a threat to our crops. But I'll let other members have a go at pinning it down (pun intended!).
