We’d never seen one before either Stanley. We saw it at a friends house over Christmas in Scotland, and I thought I know what that could be put on. :good:

Many years ago when I was delivering flashing for an extension at the bonded warehouses at Menstrie I was treated to straight whisky raw from the distillery and full strength. It tastes like turpentine! I also learned about spillage and ullage and the fact that the small amount lost by evaporation from the closed cask over the years is called the angels share. All important because the revenue allow for them when duty is charged when the whisky moves out of bond.

A spirit safe or intermediate spirit receiver is an enclosed device used in the distillation of Scotch whisky. The distillate from the still passes into it, and can be seen through the glass sides or windows, but cannot be directly accessed. The distiller can analyse the spirit inside the device, and decide where it should be sent.

So it's safe from tampering, tapping off and also from fire risk due to the liquid being inflammable.

I'll call it solved but nobody has mentioned the pertinent point that it is locked and called a safe because it can only be accessed by the revenue or under their control as the spirit is under bond as it passes through the safe. It's taxable but isn't charged until it comes out of bond.
