Why the short wooden posts in the gutters?

I think the town is dressed up for Charter Day celebrations, could the posts be there ready to provide some sort of crowd control for the parade as it goes through the narrow part of town?

The Parker's Arms, opposite the church, also dressed up for Charter Day, with crowd control barriers in place!

Not Colne, Barlick. I did these a few years ago and enjoyed the challenge of getting the original location of the photographer right. I hope to do the same with some of the Colne pics.

Is this opposite the church that's next to Shackleton Hall?

Wendy are you sure its opposite the church, I've always been under the impression that it was opposite what in now Richmond court. corner of Market Place. I've never checked Barret's directories so I could be wrong.

The pub opposite Richmond Court was the Swan (hence Swan Croft). The Parkers was in Church St.

Not absolutely certain without checking other photos Ken but i think there is a photo taken from the church tower looking down on the Parkers Arms. You might be thinking of The Swan Hotel which was on Market Street below the Hole in the Wall...about where Althams is now. I find them very confusing because they are both beside old buildings with similar tumble down gable ends. The Parkers Arms seems to have had its facade rebuilt at some point so it looks even more like the Swan. I'll post more photos tomorrow.
Just seen Noyna's post! :good:

Wendy, :good: for crowd control. Kev, ditto for before and after. I'm sure the original snapper won't mind....

What strikes me about that photo (apart from the mini advert) is how skilled the graffiti artist was at signwriting! It can't be easy forming perfectly even letters at the best of times, never mind hanging off a bridge.

The solitary figure reminds me of a Lowry painting. If Kev works his magic on it you could flog copies for £ thousands. :laugh5:

Apart from the tarmac and more double yellow lines it hasn't changed much.
