Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Sandy Lane Dukinfield in about 1900. Why is it a forgotten corner? Personal reasons, my Aunty Doreen had a sweet shop at the top of the lane where it met Oxford Road, on the corner opposite the Oxford Cinema. Many happy memories of both the shop and the cinema.....

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
This is about to become a forgotten corner. Gissing and Lonsdale's offices on Wellhouse Road The business has been sold. The clock, which Johnny Pickles made for Riley Street Methodist Church in Earby as a memorial to his old master Henry Brown, is to be moved to Bancroft for safety.
The dedication Johnny put on the clock.

Traveller invasion on Ellenroad land in 1991. Best forgotten, an experience not to be repeated and I hope none of you ever have to deal with one.... It strains your tolerance of other humans severely!

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Jim and Edith Haworth in 1940. They lived at Lane Bottoms and Jim ran his business as 'Firewood King' from a wooden shed at the top of the lane. Jim was a mate of James Rushton and a strong Labour man all his life. I have been told that this was the reason he worked as Barlick's Firewood King. He was blacklisted by the local manufacturers and was denied work in the mills.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
I don't know where I got this image from but the caption is 'Picnic at Catlow Bottoms' and from the dress I'd put it at about 1900 if not slightly earlier.
It's a proper forgotten corner, these young people were entering a century of wars and conflict and everything was going to change. I look at this image and wonder what today's young people are going to see. It will not be any more stable....

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Laying the tram tracks for the extension from the Rock Hotel to Lane House in Trawden. The extension was opened on December 21st 1905 and closed on June 3rd 1928.
The tracks remained in position until around 1942 when they were taken up for the war effort.
I used to use their old path as a short cut when walking from Mal Tool on Cotton Tree Lane to my house on Hollin Hall

I think I can remember the track, was it on the left as you went down the hill to Trawden from the main road?

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The tram tracks branched off to the left just as you passed the Rock (now the Trawden Arms). When I used to walk up the track the left side was 2 scrapyards. These have now gone and the area has been developed into new houses.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The joke about the Rock was that the snowdrift in the yard never completely melted year on year. I don't know what the origin of that was.

This little building houses Hall Spout Ram at Salterforth, a hydraulic ram installed by the Gledstone Estate to pump water up to their tenancies above Salterforth in the days before mains water was available.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
This is what was left of a Smith Rodley crane abandoned in a quarry at Slaidburn. The quarry was worked by contractors who were building a nearby reservoir and evidently when the job ended they abandoned the crane. I came across it in 1978 and have no idea whether it is still there...

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The caption on the pic is wrong in that by the time this was taken the mill was running as a foundry. You can see the cupola furnace and the steps leading up to it to charge it.

Going back to the Quaker meeting house I'm sure it was on the 'Bridle Path' connecting Cross Lane and Earby Rd.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
I think you are right Ken, it's now converted to a private house. It must be close to the Inghamite Chapel graveyard.
