The talk we are having on Tuesday 21st looks interesting. It is Dr Stephen Caunce talking about "Business & Pleasure Combined; The Yorkshire Hiring Fairs".

We start our meetings again on Tuesday after the summer break. Our speaker was to have been Hazel Wilkinson talking about Foulridge in Wartime, but unfortunately Hazel isn't well so we are showing a TV film about Lothersdale made in the early 70's. It is a excellent film showing life on the farms, in the quarry and the mill and it also features Kenneth Wilson who wrote the History of Lothersdale. A glimpse into the recent past...
If there is time afterwards we also have a slideshow of photos of old Earby.
7.30pm New Road Community Centre, Earby.

Gosh..I would have enjoyed both of those talks, having lost family at Somme and Flanders...AND having had ancestors who worked the canal .

You should have popped over Maz, I'll let you know in good time for our next meeting! We had a good turn out last night of over 40 people, canals & railways always draw in the crowds.

No, I'm afraid not. You would need to go to Barlick Library.

Barlick Library have all the B&E on microfiche. I read 1939 to 1946 researching the missing names for the war memorial. The fiches in the main are good copies as well, all legible in date order and available for each year in the cabinets next to the machine.

Anything in particular that you are looking for Moh?

Moh, I've posted extracts from Craven Herald for 1929/1932 for interest. I trawled them for Barlick and Earby topics.

I am looking for an obituary notice for January 1923 for my grandfather (who I knew nothing about until I began my family tree) John Thomas Turner. I sent a message to Pendle Council but they have no record of him being buried in Earby cemetery.

I'll try and have a look for you later this afternoon Moh. I'm off to the garden centre but if back in time I will pop into the library, as long as no-one is on the fiche machine it should only take 10 or 15 minutes. Will post again in here later.

Back from the library but unfortunately I have drawn a blank.

First of all Barlick only holds the B&E microfiche's from 1935 onwards, the Librarian tells me that as far as she is aware the B&E did not start production until circa 1933 anyway. Prior to that the only local paper was the Craven Herald which has been around since the mid 19C.

The problem here is that the issues of the Craven Herald although a broadsheet newspaper have al been photographed in landscape. Coupled with the fact that the CH used a smaller typeface than the B&E there is a great difficulty in reading them on the machine. At maximum zoom you have to pan each page both up and down and left to right to scan the whole page and at that resolution the typeface still only looks like defocused 10pt. I ran into this problem when researching for the war memorial. The library does hold original copies of some issues of the Craven Herald upstairs in the workroom but nothing before the early 1930's. That was going to be my next avenue for research for missing names from WWII.

I have looked on the fiche which covers issues published 1921 to 1924. Back then the CH although large was quite a thin publication, no more than around 8 pages. Skipton and Ilkey news by about page 3 followed by the BMD's and acknowledgements, odd obituaries from near and far then news from around the district via individual town correspondents, very much the same today. Not sure of an exact date, I started in December 1922 and finished at the end of February 1923. 1923 Issue started at January 12th (could be one missing there). Not sure either of where he was living, so I thought I had better check the news sections from around the district.

So, I have checked but cant see any reference to your Grandfather in BMD's, Obits, Barlick, Earby or Kelbrook news sections.

Any more info to narrow it down a bit more Moh? I have no problem in having another look if needs be.

Are you trying to discover where he was buried Moh, or do you know that he should be in Earby? I had a look for him on Ancestry (because I'm nosy!) and saw from the 1911 census that he was born in Burnley. Could he have been buried in a family plot back in Burnley?

The Craven Heralds I trawled were original hard copies in the stack upstairs. There are many more.....

Thanks Ian. He died 1st Jan 1923 at 5 Shuttleworth Street, Earby. He was born in Burnley, but had left his wife and youngest son in Burnley to move to Earby with 2 older sons to live with my grandma & their son, my dad. She is listed on the 1911 census as housekeeper!! I have checked with Burnley cemetery and he is not buried there. There is a Thomas Turner buried in Earby but he is too old and the wrong date. I know when he married his wife he signed the register as Thomas Turner. Another brick wall!!

Moh, I was always amused by the number of men who had housekeepers and nieces living with them around that time. I always suspected this was similar to RC priests having so many nephews!

I'm not quite sure whether Foulridge falls within the remit of Earby & District but here goes.
At the bottom of Smithy Lane (Shirt Neck Harry) where Foulridge Ings Beck crosses the road there is a ford. On one side is a newly built footbridge and on the other there is a large stone sat on two pillars. This allows the water to flow underneath and across the road. However, the construction and location, ie: next to a ford, would suggest that this may be an old clapper bridge. Would anyone know if this was the case. Or is just a simple barrier?
