Quite Ian. And was also a market place at one time after the Alhambra burned down.

Wellhouse mill as built in about 1900 when some buildings had been demolished as part of the refurbishment of the mill after the Calf Hall Shed Company bought it from the Craven Bank. Then almost the same viewpoint in 1982.
The high arched windows in the early image are the two separate beam engine houses that powered the mill. It was a condition of sale to the CHSC that these engines would be scrapped and replaced by a modern horizontal tandem engine by Burnley Ironworks. This made the bank's investment safer because they would have a modern mill to sell if CHSC reneged on the loan to buy the mill.

Lots of forgotten bits in this image. I think this pc must have been made in about the 1930s. It looks as though Hudson's Building on the right is still a pie shop. On the left we have the chimney stack for Clough mill and the mill itself is there in the background.

In 1978 this was a perfectly acceptable standard for a kitchen and laundry. This was at Hey Farm. I am struck by how old fashioned and out of date it looks now. Evidently a forgotten corner, after all it's 45 years ago.....

The lady on the right is the landlady and owner of what was then reputed to be the oldest pub in Britain in Hay. I was there in 1998 and it was tiny. I believe it has now closed.

Another image of the tiny pub in Hay on Wye. It was a time warp let alone a forgotten corner! Get the Anaglypta ceiling.
I've just remembered, her claim to fame was that the Great Train Robbers called in for a drink on their way to their hideout.....
I went for a furtle and found THIS. It was the Three Tuns and the lady was Lucy Powell.

'Steam Joe Rynda' with his enormous collection of defunct steam traction engines in Minnesota in 1990. His family had been steam contractors for many years and never sold an engine when it fell out of use, they simply parked them in the fields around their house.

Image

When I was there in 1990 there was getting on for four acres worth of engines. I suspect this is a forgotten corner now.....

See THIS article on the man.
Nd look at this Youtube video of the auction of the engines in 2004.

Greenberfield lido in 1958. I doubt if we will ever see this again!
Now this really jangles a few memories, we used to frequently swim, fish and play here. In fact there was a picture on this site a while back, which really shook me, I was taken just a little further down the footpath and looking across the footbridge.
It included me at about 13 yrs of age, but more importantly, also my best friend John Henderson; my only picture of him.
We first met at Gisburn Rd Infants then became good friends throughout our school years until careers forced our separation.
A subsequent request on this site was posted some years ago by one of his daughter's who was trying to research Henderson's in Barlick, I spotted it and was able to help in some small way.
She also mentioned that in going through her late father's diary, she had spotted that he had recorded my marriage and location back in 1961,we had not been in touch for over six years by then, I found that really sad.
So folks you just never know just what memories a photograph can stimulate.
I did try to find out who posted the original photo I saw, without success, to thank them and obtain permission to pass a copy to relatives.

In 1979 kids were still using the canal for play. These lads were fishing. All frowned on now of course, too dangerous, they could fall in. (And canal water is dirty and infectious!)

Sweeping and incorrect statement there Stanley plenty of folk including young lads and lassies still go fishing, it is still one of the most popular pastimes.

I was referring to young lads sitting on the slope at the side of the canal Ian, I thought that was obvious. The authorities still frown on kids playing next to bodies of water unsupervised and swimming is too dangerous for many reasons. I am aware of the popularity of coarse fishing.

Old post card of the post office at Bracewell. Possibly 1900?. Interesting that a hamlet as small as Bracewell had a post office (and a school), could this have been influenced by the Hall and its position as owner of the estate?

Self assessed risk Stanley, good that at the time of the photo the kids still had the freedom to learn it themselves. We have discussed this before on the site and concluded that it was of benefit in the whole. Glad I had the freedom as well.

Exactly, couldn't agree more Ian. Lots of kids don't get the opportunities we had of course and there are too many distractions that entail nothing more strenuous than tapping keys on an electronic device. Parents think that's less dangerous, for myself, I have my doubts.
