Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The boiler at Stott Park bobbin mill at the bottom end of Lake Windemere in 1978 when decisions were being made as to whether to refurbish the mill or not. It was a pet project of the DOE who were in charge of Ancient Monument listing then and at the time the boiler was abandoned. I don't know what has happened since but this scene will definitely be a forgotten corner.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The mill seems to still attract lots of visitors as one of English Heritages' properties. It won silver in the small visitor attraction of the year at the Cumbria Tourist Awards.

There is a good article about the mill here -

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
It was one of their better ideas Pete. I found them this Gilkes turbine at Kirkstone Quarry, just what they needed for the mill but they never did anything about it.
However they did take one piece of advice from me and gave Brown and Pickles the job of refurbishing the steam engine. Newton did it and it was like a new one when he had finished the job.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
This is the footprint of the pub in the village of Mardale that used to exist at the bottom of what is now the reservoir at Haweswater. This was in 1976 when drought had dropped the level lower than almost anyone could remember. It's underwater again now and a forgotten corner but how long will it be before it is visible again?

The football team lads were all in my year, one or two in my class and some no longer with us. Not forgotten to me.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Ian Bowker, younger brother of Barry. Chris Day both are now deceased. Colin Aldersley was from Gargrave, John Eltringham (Elf) from Salterforth. Bob Bradley is still around and has the garden centre at Salterforth amongst other stuff.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
I seem to think I was told that John Eltringham was a postman in Salterforth at one time.
Another old school friend of mine, David Penman, was a postman in Barlick.
Chris Day was an apprentice at Rolls Royce and went to the technical college extension of Barlick Modern at the same time as myself.
The Bowkers lived on Harrison St, just below what was then the Barlick Modern sports field.
Paul Carradice's dad had a small scrapyard up Stoneybank Rd in Earby.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The end of Church Street in 1983. Cross Keys hadn't been 'modernised' and the Seven Stars was still a popular public house. Things have changed a bit since in the forty years that has elapsed since then.

What's the building with the fancy windows that you can see beyond the Seven Stars?

It's the old Baptist Chapel in Walmsgate Wendy. Here it is in 1979 when it was a furniture store.....

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Thank you! Is it a house now?
Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
I knew it was a chapel of some sort It is a house now, Stewart Lewis lives there. Stanley sold Hey Farm to Stewart's father (a bit of useless information there).

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Hey Farm in 1969. Bought (with six acres of land) in 1959 for £4,200 on a bank loan with a wage of £8-10-0 a week. Young people today can't believe that such things were possible...

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Another example of a forgotten corner. In the late 1960s my mate Ernie Roberts bought one of the cottages on Club Row for £500 on Rental Purchase.... I think that method of buying a house, once common, has also died out.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
A pleasant summer morning in 1977. Roy Wellock, Ernie Roberts and John Plummer are helping me to whitewash the shed roof windows. This cooled the shed down slightly in summer and was always done in June using very thin whitewash. By the end of summer it had washed off. A forgotten corner, I don't think anyone does this now.....

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Post Office corner in the days before we had the new bus shelter and its fancy clock which never told the right time. Also before the CCTV cameras were installed. The utilitarian Gents electric clock on the Council Shop was totally reliable. And we still had a Post Office next door. This must be in the 1990s I think. (Three telephones as well!)
