Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The aftermath of the flood at Bancroft in 1932. The water never reached the mill but poured over the end of the dam where you can see the culvert pipe. Wild Brothers had their storage space just over the fence and that was the source of the debris that was washed downstream to block the culvert under Walmsgate.
If you look in the LTP at Harold Duxbury's evidence and also Ernie Roberts you'll find good accounts of the flood and the damage it caused.

If you are ever on the West coast of the States and have a yen for kitsch, seek out the Madonna Inn at San Luis Obispo. (LINK) I was introduced to it in 1979 and have never found anything like it anywhere else.

In 2009 the volunteers from Kew Bridge pumping station in London visited Bancroft Engine. They took the trouble to come specially to visit us.

Harry Horsfield, a very well respected farmer from Sunnybank at Whitemoor judging at a Young Farmer's Competition at Elslack. This interaction between the older end of the farming community and the rising youngsters was one of the most productive features of the organisation. A forgotten corner now.....

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
I tripped over this steam roller in 1978 at Bury Railway station. I was giving a lift to the late John Robinson who was in charge of a fund at the Science Museum in South Kensington who had to catch a train at Manchester to London. He insisted on diverting to Bury to see this machine which was the subject of am application for a grant. A lovely man but no concept of time or punctuality!

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
One of the things about snapping is that at the time something like this might not be seen as interesting but 40 years later it could be for some. For instance, I might be mistaken but show this image to Sue at Clarion House and it might interest her.

Sue Boardman? She is a primary school head teacher. The other regular Sue at the Clarion is Sue Nike, as far as I am aware she has never taught but she was a post person for a lot of years. Both live in Barrowford or a near as dammit.

I'll ask her next time I see her.
Here we go, two Sue's in the foreground Susan Nike on the left with Rusty, Sue Boardman seated, our Secretary Carol Hopkin sat behind and myself and Gwyndon (John) Boardman on the other bench. I hasten to add that none of these folk are forgotten corners.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
An interesting fact about Gwyndon and Sue in folk dancing circles. John is an excellent caller and and was not shy of a bit of flag cracking himself, his wife Sue always taught and then led the dances at the many ceilidh's we used to go to. Many arranged for party fund raising and the like. Strip the Willow anyone?

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The Pioneer Car Park and fire station in 2005. As is the case with many record shots, nothing to see here but hang on a minute. I am not quite sure what the work in the car park was for but there are other items of interest. Notice that the large lamp standards on the central island weren't installed then, they came later. Look at the steps up into Co-operative Street. The old wooden garage is still there and the lamp post in the corner which was completely rotted out at the bottom and on the verge of falling over. The wires mesh security fence round the fire station yard hadn't been installed and if you look to the extreme left you'll see that the recycling bins were still in place, they were later moved to the Rainhall Road Car Park.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Looks like construction of the central island to me. With regard to the recycling bins. They were moved in 2014 so that the new entrance to the war memorial could be made and the plaques for the new entries and the Rohilla commemoration could be installed.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
In 2017 it was decided that the best way to protect the exit from the steps up into Co-operative Street in the Pioneer Car Park was more road markings and two protecting signs. Nice try Lads but two days later this is what had happened. It makes you wonder how competent the drivers of the delivery wagons are because they were the culprits.
The signs were cut off and done away with. They are my forgotten corner today.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Castle view in 1982. For as long as I can remember an old lady called Bridget lived in this end house. Then quite suddenly she was gone, the house was gentrified and Bridget was no more. My kids loved her and called in as they went round to Mrs Brown's shop on Crow Row. Today's forgotten corner.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Apart from the basement rooms under the workshops on Commercial Street that were used at one time as slaughter houses and of late the one at the far end has been converted into a dwelling I think, Castle View is the only other place in Barlick where basements have been used on a level below the actual row itself. I first came across this arrangement in Hebden Bridge where it is common.
The ones under Castle View have been used for a variety of purposes with at least two used as dwellings at times.
Not very common.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Castle Cement chimney at Clitheroe. April 2009. Great rejoicing in the town when the 300ft stack came down. For years it was suspected to be the source of a lot of pollution dropped on the town including dioxins One of the main reasons my daughter Margaret migrated to Perth from Clitheroe. Now a forgotten corner.
