Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Maybe it's because the shops all have flats above them and would require individual foul waste systems.

No, these are groups of toilets. If the weather permits I shall do a pic later today.
One of my old favourites.... Over the years we have added and revised services in the town and if you keep your eyes open you can find cast iron covers like this one, some even more worn and cracked. They are all signs of services which are now redundant and forgotten corners.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Its a bit the other way round, If PTAL (Public Transport Accessibility - though not necessarily to where one might wish to go) is good , then properties should not have parking to discourage private car use - (Electric) car club spaces are encouraged ( but hourly rates seem more than an old fashioned car hire company)

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
I think Stanley is wondering what 1A Frank Street originally was - some kind of engineering facility (1 is the Pet Shop) and the alleyway to the rear shows that the back of 3 is a different kind of building compared to what one would expect of 3 Frank Street (The Chinese Take Away Place). I suspect an old Post Office Directory for the Area (Kellys or Similar) may hold the answer unless they were some of the lodging places referred to elsewhere for the additional workers of the weaving sheds compared to the normal weekday resident population.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The backs of the first two buildings in Franks street. Both have multiple toilets which suggest each had a large public room.

I struck me that we have lost voices like this singing songs like this. So it's a forgotten corner.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
This seems to be a forgotten corner. Fenestration, waste pipes and the size of the two buildings on Frank Street point to the fact that each of them had a large public room. They are separate builds and seem to be too far away from what used to be the weaver's institute to be connected with that.
So, at the moment they are a forgotten corner. If anyone has any info I'd be pleased to hear it.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
I'm just guessing here as I don't know the area well but if that building is 1 Frank Street then it was the local Food Office during the war. The Barlick & Earby Times contains a number of articles concerning a proposed move of the office to the Queens Hall in 1950. One of the articles (attached) tells us that the building was owned by the Co op and they wanted the premises back.
Another suggestion that's more of a guess...The Old Age Pensioners Association must have had large premises on Frank Street before the new brick building was built in the early 50's. There are reports of concerts, dances etc at their hall on Frank Street in the 1940s.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
Wonderful Wendy! I'll go with both those until someone comes up with something better. The Food Office role would demand separate male and female toilets.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The Conservative Club on Station Road in 1982.
Looking at the number of licensed premises that have closed since 1982 when this pic was taken and considering the maintenance costs of a large detached building like this one has to wonder how long they can possibly keep going in their present role. Could this be a possible forgotten corner before very long?

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
The two remaining clubs in Barlick are both quite well supported especially Green Street which modernised extensively when we bought the tap room and upstairs from them which allowed them to do the work. The Con Club building of course has a very popular Gym which is in the former Queens Hall on the top floor.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
There's the Old Grey Pigeon Club on Butts that's supposed to be doing quite well too. The building did open as The Lounge a while ago but it didn't have a very good reputation.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
I don't think it's operating as a WMC though. Mind you neither are the other two. The distinction of course was that you needed a CIU card for entry or you had to pay a nominal entrance fee on the door. It used to be sixpence at Green Street WMC. The latter does have a members card which does give a discount at the bar I believe but no longer has Cyril I think it was on the door! No idea how the Con Club operates, that is the dark side, they still have a portrait of Thatcher in the bar.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
I am a member of Foulridge Social Club, the £10 a year fee goes towards the upkeep of the place. It is open to 'guests' but I have seen a few events restricted to members only.
I still have my old CIU membership wallet.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
My dad used to have a saying "Everyone in the Northern Union...." Was that a reference to the Clubs and Institutes organisation?
Today's forgotten corner....
The Ivory Hall club in Brook Street in 1980 just before demolition. Built in 1899. The Ivory Hall was long associated with the friendly society movement being the local lodge for the Rose in the Valley Lodge of the Order of the Golden Fleece. Also associated with left wing activities like the Labour Party and the local branch of the Communist Party founded in about 1921 and supported by Jim Rushton and Jim Howarth. In later years the club had a dubious reputation but as I never went there I can't comment.

There is a plaque in the corner of the car park on the wall which refers to it's past usage.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
I'll bet it doesn't mention the strippers!
The Foster's Arms lying empty before redevelopment as pictured by Angus. Originally a farm it was a very popular pub. Said by some to be the oldest pub in the town. Here it is in earlier days.

I think Frank Neil used to be the landlord there.
I worked with his son, also called Frank Neil, at Mal Tool in Colne. Frank Junior lived up Folly Lane.

Re: FORGOTTEN CORNERS
50 years ago Harold Duxbury was a good man for me and helped me with information about the Calf Hall Shed Company as well as being an informant for the Lancashire Textile Project. He and his wife were very active in the Salvation Army and in those days their HQ was in the block opposite Gott's Garage. The Army was very active in the town and members were regularly on the streets collecting for charitable purposes selling the War Cry and Young Soldier.
I can't remember when I last saw any Army members. Are they a forgotten corner in Barlick?
