Lancashire Records Launch On-line

Post by Gloria »

Taken from LFHHS yahoo forum

Just note to give a 'heads up' on Lancashire records about to be launched online.

26th July - over 2 million baptism, marriage & burial records 1538-1986 on Ancestry from the Lancashire Archive collection. I believe it will include digitised images of the parish records.

28th July - Preston Guild Burgess Rolls - database of the 27 surviving Guild Rolls. A project was led I think by our own David Eaves. There is an event to launch this at the Lancashire Archive, Bow Lane, Preston on this date, though places should be reserved.

Thanks for that Gloria. I've been a member of LFHHS for a couple of years, but never joined the forum. Tried once but gave up, I think the process was not too easy - or maybe they wanted too much commitment to Yahoo? Might try again.

Do it Tripps, do it. I think I remember struggling at the beginning to register, but managed it and do use it. It seems to have got more popular in the last 6/12 months. Lots of helpful people.

Is it meant the Lancashire records will only be viewable using Ancestry ( a pay for use site ? ) or can one view via the Lancashire Record Office site ?

Most of the records I find on line are mis-spellings of the name I am researching and they (Ancestry) don't easily give credit for items viewed in detail which are wrong on their indexing.

I think the records they are putting on ancestry are the ones which can be searched for free if you go to Preston.

"Do it Tripps, do it. "

Couldn't resist that  I am part way through the process, though I suspect it would be easier to Join the Freemasons than this group!
You speak elsewhere about unwelcoming sites - This lot would take some beating......

I haven't had much to do with it for a while, but in the past I found everyone very helpful and in turn I have tried to help others. Put a query on and see how you get on.
LFHHS Chorley group run a very good "Celebration of Family History" each year, well worth a visit. I will bump details of it if I can find it.

Thanks Jill. I let my ancestry sub lapse a few days ago and I am waiting for an offer to renew it again. I managed my last one for half price---fingers crossed.
