It's taken me a while to work out where that was taken on Water Street. I pass it on a regular basis coming down Stoneybank and round the bend but there are always cars parked in front and you have to concentrate on traffic coming the other way or out of the junction. That's my excuse anyway!

I think it's (was) an Austin Westminster - I had one in the 1960's in Germany. Got me the nickname 'The Baron'.
3 litres and 20 mpg, but fuel was very nearly free. So were cigarettes- it's a wonder I survived.

I could never make up my mind whether it was a Westminster or an Oxford David. The chassis underneath was a Leyland Comet tractor unit!

Earby Brass Band Club circa 1974/1975

My big sister Shirley Brett with Bill Luty.
Bill was either the president or the treasurer of the club at that time.
Sadly Shirley was killed in a car accident on Barlick New Road in 1976.

I saw that view every morning as a young lad when I walked to work at Earby Light at Dotcliffe Mill.
I'd follow the footpath through Harrison's field, Tractors field, under the railway bridge and join the road at Sough.

Tractors field used to be a football pitch but for some reason they dug it up.

Another view here of the same event.

I think they used that field for trials of the tractors, I used to see them going across the road. That's possibly why it was ploughed.

Alder Hill Street School staff, 1950's

I attended this school for around 6 months or so when my family moved from Bradford to Earby in 1964.
At that time Bradford had stopped the 11+ exam so when I arrived at Alder Hill I had to sit in a room by myself and take it.
I still don't know to this day whether I passed or not because on the school preference form my mum and dad put:
Preference 1 Barlick Modern
Preference 2 Barlick Modern
Preference 3 Barlick Modern

So I went to Barlick Modern

That was how things worked in those days Mick. The only other option was Ermysted's at Skipton and that meant the expense of a uniform and travel by train every day.

I passed my 11+ but didn't want to go to Ermysted's. I was stood on a chair and ridiculed by my teacher for wasting an opportunity. Apparently she thought my place should be given to someone else even if they didn't pass! Never forgotten that, us and them attitude, same as we are still suffering from with this bloody government.

Lots of references in the LTP that back up your experience Ian, many of them fuelled by the prejudice of the teachers. Many parents couldn't afford the uniforms or the travel and that was why the kids missed out.
