Planned Site Outage Today - Saturday

Post by PanBiker »

Notification to all users of a planned site outage today at 3.00pm UK time.

I will be shutting the server down for site maintenance and upgrade.

Prior to shut down I will log off all users who may still be on the site, the work should take no longer than an hour at the most.

Upgrade has been carried out, server rebooted and all should be OK. Please report any anomalies in relevant threads.

Gallery users can now upload multiple images if they wish.

I see Kev got in first with a cartoon image in the Jokes thread - 4 minutes after Ian's `all clear' post!

I was lurking in the background to provide moral support and be on hand to provide any assistance.

That was quick and efficient. Thanks for putting the work in on the preparations. Glad it went smoothly. :biggrin2:
Later.... A thought struck me. Would it be helpful to delete the whole of the first Metal Work archive images? Is there any way of doing that? If it helps and seeing as how the topic is mainly my posts I wouldn't be at all offended if it was zapped. The images aren't being used anyway because the links are buggered and were ephemeral anyway. If that's possible, start a Metal Work 3 Archive and after a short interval zap the Metal Work 2 as well, they also are ephemeral. Some of them are Bob's but if you asked him I'm sure he'd say the same....

Gallery isn't clever enough to do that automatically Stanley. There is no surviving backward reference point to the images now that the URL string format has changed. Even if there was it would need some kind of search script writing to target the files.

The only way it could be done is if you had put all the images in exactly the same album like the LTP images are. Gallery controls are very similar to the category/ forum/ sub forum structure of the main site. You can target any of the individual albums in the hierarchy file structure but its an all or nothing situation.

Bobs images would be a different kettle of fish as well as he doesn't use the gallery. He adds them as attachments which all save in the "files" directory directly on the server. You can access them all in the ACP but again it would be a manual task to find them and delete them.

The current overheads for Gallery and Attachments are as follows:

Gallery: 6.1GB
Attachments: 16GB

Just over 22GB in total accumulated in 10 years. We now have 78.5GB free space on the SSD partition so not really an issue.

Gallery is more prudent and controllable albeit with a big hammer. I may do some maintenance there on redundant or multiple copied images such as the LTP collection. They are all embedded in the mirror and the whole lot is available as a downloadable zip file. We don't need them in the Gallery as well!
