SHUTTLEWORTH FAMILIES IN BARNOLDSWICK

INDEX ENTRIES AS OF 11 January 2005

Charles Shuttleworth and Co were manufacturers at Victoria Mill in Earby. Charles Shuttleworth was originally a joiner and builder in Barnoldswick and prior to starting in manufacturing was the landlord of the Punch Bowl Inn at Earby. His sons George, Edgar and Richard followed him in the business.

Fred Shuttleworth was the son in law of Robert Nutter when he took space in Brook Shed in 1908.

Higher Park. Robert Shuttleworth, 54, farmer of 120 acres.

1873
In Atkinson’s Barlick Churches and Township, page 24. Atkinson states that James Crook owned the last row of houses on the right at Hey and sold them to George Shuttleworth for £400 when he migrated to America with his family. This was occupied by tenants for a while and then bought by Edward Slater, a noted tee-totaller, who converted the building in 1873 to a public house and named it the Greyhound. The first landlady was Esther Slater. She left on December 14th 1879 and was followed by one of Edward Slater’s brothers. The pub was bought by a brewery ‘a few years later’.

1887
Charles Shuttleworth mentioned in Barrett’s directory for 1887 as watchmaker of Rainhall Road, Barnoldswick. In the 1890 Local Board Election he was a candidate and his address was given as 27 Rainhall Road and his occupation as joiner and builder.

Ughtred H Shuttleworth, 5 years.
This is the same family that was at Hill Street in 1881. Funny thing is that his mother was a widow, make of that what you will.

Funny thing about this is that I’m typing this out sat in the kitchen of 10 East Hill Street!
