One thing you could do is try searching for the old Steeplejack's corner on the archive site. Here's a LINK to some of part five. Not all the archive is searchable yet, it's a work in progress but we had many members working abroad.
I just checked the link and was surprised to find that the links to previous SCs in the first post on page one still work. It won't be complete but get searching, you might find some clues.

I think I may have posted this on the old site but I came across it yesterday while reading Arthur Ransome's Racundra's Third Cruise. It's a picture he took of a stork on a disused chimney watching a lunar eclipse. The chimney was near Riga, Latvia in an area badly affected by the fighting in WW1. What struck me was that it is square brick and there was evidently a shortage of steeplejacks, hence the rough dogs in the stack for access. They don't look very safe to me!

Funerals have been on my mind this week. This is from Peter Tatham's funeral in May 1988. I thought perhaps some of you might recognise someone. Can it really be almost 25 years ago?

These men were serious blokes and sartorial matters didn't mean a lot to them! It was a good funeral, a bloke stood up and announced that there would be no service, just three minutes silence and two verses of Abide with Me. He then pulled his watch out and timed us. The coffin vanished and the next move was straight down to the pub. As we walked away one of my friends commented that Peter was going up his last chimney...
The only other funeral that compared was Jim Barnes'. His son was there in handcuffs accompanied by a warder.....

Morning Young Tom! Thanks for that link, good research and nice to see that he found some of the SC responses. It just goes to show how important it is that Doc eventually gets the complete archive back on line. A very impressive piece of research.....

Station Chimney.jpg
This is a nice little chimney in the local station yard, the yard was a terminus, but no one can tell me what the stack was used for?, sugggestion was for drying sand for use in helping traction !, but it would seem to be a sledge hammer to crack a nut
The yard was passenger ,goods, and livestock, as far as i'm aware the stack is in what was the gods yard, the station & house are in the background

I'd say that that was almost certainly one of the uses it could be put to. Could have been an incinerator as well for burning rubbish. Lots of oily cotton waste to get rid of.

Bodger, I like your picture of the railway stack - and all the statues around it too! A few of those statues would look lovely in your garden...if your missus would let you have them!

Here's a photo of a chimney being felled at the Lee Moor brickworks, Devon. I don't have a date for the photo and it was on view at the Wheal Martyn China Clay Museum, St Austell, Cornwall. The image is a bit rough because I couldn't avoid reflections when I took my photo, they had put theirs behind a plastic cover.
Image

I wonder if the felling went according to plan? It looks like the chimney is about to flatten the workshops on the left!

I found another photo of the brickworks here but the chimneys look square cross section whereas the one being felled appears round section:
http://www.aditnow.co.uk/photo/lee-Moor ... age-74039/

There's a small photo of Lee Moor on this site, plus other chimneys and works:

Lorries and drivers associated with the china clay industry at St Austell. Another photo at the Wheal Martyn museum. It's got plenty of detail and it's worth going to the Gallery and clicking on that image to see an enlarged version: LINK
