TODAY'S PENNINE WEATHER

Another good day yesterday and apart from a bit of mizzle in the late evening we didn't get any rain. At 20:30, it was overcast and mizzling. It was the same first thing this morning and I have just popped out, the overcast has cleared and we have some scattered high cloud. Early sun is breaking through from the east. The glass is down on 1003mb. The forecast is for a bright sunny day with no appreciable rain. The constant west wind is light at the moment but soon gets to be moderate giving a high of 17C and a low of 13C with a wind chill of -2C as the wind strengthens. Another quiet pleasant day and the outlook is good, chance of rain tomorrow and the day after but getting warmer, they are forecasting 25C at the moment for next Tuesday. Could be summer?
06:05. A dry walk, it was sunny when we set off but it's clouding over a bit. Very low flow over Butts Dam proves there has been no weight of rain although everything looks fresh this morning. We could do with one good soak and it looks as though we might get it over the next couple of days....

Cooler yesterday but it ended as a bright sunny day. At 20:30 it was bright, dry and mild. Same first thing this morning, just looked out and it's still dry and calm with thin broken cloud. The glass is steady on 1004mb. The forecast is for a cloudy day with rain, at times possibly thundery, from late morning on. The moderate wind is variable in direction but mainly southerly giving a high of 19C and a low of 15C tonight with only a slight wind chill. The outlook is for improvement and getting very warm.
We were back from the Butcher's at 06:45. It was a pleasant walk under broken cloud with the sun vainly struggling to break through, it eventually failed. There is a fresh south wind and it's a cooler morning. I can well believe the forecast of rain by late morning as the cloud is thickening but we had a dry walk.

The rain came in yesterday at 09:00, never heavy, it was just scattered showers all day. At 20:30 last night the flags were damp and we had broken cloud but it was not raining. First thing this morning the flags were damp but it was dry with a light breeze. I've just looked outside and we have 100% overcast and light rain. The glass fell all day and this morning is on 996mb and still falling. The forecast is for scattered showers until noon and then brightening up with some sun. The constant moderate wind starts in the south and by noon has settled in the west giving a high of 17C and a low of 13C. The wind chill will be as much as -3C this afternoon. The outlook is dry and getting much warmer into next week.
06:05. We had 100% overcast and light rain for the first half of the walk but then the rain stopped and there are the first signs of breaks in the cloud from the South. The flow over the dam in Butts is still light which is a good sign as it shows that what rain we have had has been absorbed into the ground. Growy weather, the trees are looking a lot happier.
07:00. It's started raining again.....

The rain passed over and we had a fine late afternoon and evening. At 20:30 we had broken cloud, a light breeze and it was dry. Same first thing this morning and now it is the same, the broken cloud and the wind are both light and the morning has a fresh feel. The glass started rising yesterday afternoon and this morning is on 1010mb and still rising. The forecast is for a bright dry day. The constant SW wind is light to moderate and will give us a high of 19C and a low of 15C with only a slight wind chill. A brighter day and the outlook is for more of the same.
06:15. A perfect walk. Calm, increasing clear patches coming in from the west (to the extent that the moon is clearly visible in the SW despite the daylight.) and as we got back home the sun found a gap and is coming through strongly. All the greenery is running riot in Valley Gardens, some of the wild plants, weeds I suppose, ar over 6ft high and the brambles are full of young fruit.
I noticed the other day but forgot to mention, that the hanging sign outside the Fountain Inn has gone, perhaps for repair after the damage in a very strong wind earlier in the year. I hope so....

We never got rid of the cloud yesterday but it was a vary warm wind so we had a mild pleasant day. At 20:30 it was breezy and dry with broken cloud but a light mizzle was starting. First thing this morning we had the same conditions with very light warm rain. Just looked out and the overcast is breaking, the moon is visible. The wind has dropped and it has stopped raining at the moment. The glass fell to 1009mb during the night but since then is rising and is almost back on 1010mb.The forecast gives rain for the next hour and then brightening up to become a dry day with sunny spells. The constant SW wind is moderate and warm, it will give us a high of 21C and a low of 16C with a chill of about -3C for most of the day. The outlook is for improvement and some very hot weather over the next few days.
06:10. A pleasant mild dry walk. The cloud is still broken enough to see the moon occasionally and every now and then it darkens and looks like rain but it's held off so far. Very mild and growy and my rain gauge in Butts tells me that there was quite a good fall of rain during the night, it has been down at a trickle for days but this morning is a good miller's flow. We shall see how it develops.....

Cloud never really went away until later in the evening. At 20:30 it was breezy, dry and mild with broken cloud. First thing this morning it is overcast with a light breeze, dry and mild. Now it's lighter I can see the overcast is grey and showing signs of breaks, no sign of dawn light yet. The glass is up slightly on 1015mb. The forecast is dead simple, the overcast will clear quickly and we will have sun all day. The constant south wind is light and we can expect a high of 27C with a low of 18C tonight with virtually no wind chill. Looks like Barlick summer.
I have taken the rash decision to ditch my vest for the day at least.... I hope I don't regret this.
06:15. A very quiet mild walk. The cloud is breaking slowly but over in the east it is still thick enough to block the sun. Butts Beck is back down at a trickle. Nothing to report really, just a very warm pleasant morning.

Had a good sleep on a very warm night, woke up once and saw lightning but never heard thunder. First thing this morning we had very heavy rain but by the time we went out for our walk at 05:45 the sky was clearing, the moon was visible and it was calm and dry with just a light early morning mist from the rain. The glass is down on 1005mb. The forecast is for a sunny day bit with scattered cloud. The mainly westerly wind is light to moderate and gives a high of 22C and a low of 15C. The forecast is for tomorrow to be even hotter than yesterday.

By the way, I put a thermometer on the window cill outside in full sun yesterday afternoon and after 30 minutes it was reading 110F.

We had a huge thunderstorm in the night between 2.30am and 3.30am with a lot of extremely noisy thunder and torrential rain. The temperature here rose steadily to a max of 27.5C at about 6.00pm, I put the ponies in the barn at midday as they were getting uncomfortable with the heat and the flies.

I must have slept through it Wendy, I woke at about 01:00 and saw a lot of lightning flashes in the sky but heard no thunder. I slept for over 6 hours which is unusual for me.....

More cloud yesterday but just as warm and humid. At 20:30 it was partially clear, a light breeze and warm, no rain during the night and this morning first thing we have a clear sky and a very light breeze. Still the same with a brilliant moon and dawn light already showing in the east. The glass is up slightly at 1007mb. The forecast is for a sunny mainly dry day (chance of thunder later). The constant SE wind is light to moderate giving a high of 31C and a low of 18C tonight with negligible wind chill. The hottest day in Barlick for a long time is forecast but the outlook is cooler and cloudier.
This is just the sort of weather that produced the event on Whitemoor in July 1932 and resulted in a flood.....
06:10.Back from our walk. All I did was put a waistcoat on and not even a hat! Very pleasant cool walk, we met Jack's 3 Jack Russells and Pepe his lurcher mate so socialising has been catered for. The sun is coming in and I see no reason why the forecast of 31C would be an exaggeration. Hunker down now and do as little as possible, and that very slowly!

There is a lovely breeze up here holding the temperature back a bit. Ive just checked the ponies and they are nice and cool (under fly rugs and face masks) so they can stay out for now.

It looks as if traffic was stopped for a short time at 9am this morning to recover a breakdown and traffic is still backed up with 60 minute delays.

I think we were lucky, it was a temporary block to move something off the bridge. We were only 200 yards from the block and they let us all go after 10 minutes, other than that it was normal M25 traffic.

The BBC are saying that Cambridge was the hottest place in England today. I wouldn't argue - the car showed 40C which is a personal best by a clear 4C.

We were blessed yesterday with a breeze and scattered cloud but it was still very hot, there was an isolated shower of rain at about 16:00. At 20:30 it was warm and dry outside. front room a comfortable 74F. Good sleep and first thing it was clear with scattered cloud and lightning flashes in the east, there has been a shower, the flags were damp. Just looked out, it is still the same. A good moon and stars visible, 70F in back yard so comfortable. The glass is down slightly on 1004mb. The forecast is for a bright dry day with scattered cloud but good sun. The constant light SW wind gives us a high of 22C and a low of 15C with negligible wind chill. Looks like a perfect day but hovering in the offing are scattered thunderstorms, we have missed the worst so far and might be lucky again. The outlook is much cooler and wetter for a couple of days.
06:45. A pleasant walk down to the butchers in shirtsleeves and a waistcoat. The SW wind is cool and welcome. The sky is clear but slightly milky and sun is coming in already. This is far more comfortable weather and I am ventilating the house while it is cool.

We were woken by a thunderstorm just before 2am. It wasn't rumbling thunder, more like a series of sharp explosions followed by a short period of heavy rain.
We reached 32.5C here and it was still 26C at 10.00pm when I put the ponies back outside.

Once again I slept like a log and never heard any thunder but I noted that the puddles were full this morning. Much better today....
