See THIS BBC report on the controversy arising from publication of an image of him in black-face for a play 18 years ago. He has apologised immediately, he could do nothing else as he is seeking re-election.
This bothers me, we all know that current views on what constitutes regrettable behaviour have changed over the years. My Golliwog badge from Robertson's jam would not be acceptable now but it was OK then. I believe that we should cut people like Trudeau a bit of slack. I wasn't a rabid racist when I wore my Golliwog badge and neither was he when he blacked up. In case you have forgotten, one of the popular TV shows used to be 'The Black and White Minstrels'. I doubt if they will ever be shown again!

Does this mean that Moby-Dick by Herman Melville will be on the banned list? One of the main characters was Queequeg a highly tattooed cannibal who threw the harpoon.

It makes you wonder doesn't it P. I get the feeling these surfing vigilantes are attention seekers and it makes me wonder what they have in their pasts. Were they banging on about 'rights' twenty years ago? I doubt it.
I remember my Jewish friend Ethel pulling me up short in NY 30 years ago when I referred to someone being 'Jewed'. I explained to her that it had never struck me it was unacceptable, it was in our dialect. I have never used it since. Does that mean that I was racist or just unthinking?

That would never work today - against someone who was determined to be offended.

David, remember that things have changed, the universities are now run as 'profit centres'. They will teach anything if there's money in it!

While on holiday in Dorset we saw several people in towns pushing prams - and then realised they had little dogs in the pram, not babies! Has it become normal for people to have prams for their dogs? Will Jack want one? :extrawink:

Nothing on the web yet but search for Antarctic Glacier E28. Reports are coming in of an enormous piece of the ice shelf that has broken off and is the largest Berg ever recorded. The scientists are stressing that this is not evidence of global warming but simply an exceptional calving.
The BBC has backed down and rescinded the criticism of the TV presenter who commented on Trump. It took the intervention of the Director General.

That's sad but even more people could have been killed if it had happened at the upcoming public air show.

Exactly what I thought when a Lancaster bomber flew over my hut at a very low height recently. Seems they'd arranged for it to overfly the vintage car show which they hold at the church in the village. They must have some good connections.

You can apply via the BBMF website for any of the aircraft that the flight maintains to do a flypast or with some types a display routine. There are much stricter rules for the displays than the flypast's. I got the BBMF Dakota to our 40's event in Barlick a number of years ago. And we got both of the two remaining airworthy Lancasters our BBMF City of Lincoln and the Canadian Lancaster during our heritage weekend a few years ago.

Regarding the maintenance, many of the heritage aircraft are maintained to a much higher standard than they were when they were operational. The BBMF Lancaster had a complete strip down and rebuild a few years ago. It took over a year but it came out more or less like a newly delivered aircraft from Castle Bromwich or Chadderton.

I see this in the news today...
`Unilever to cut plastic use to appeal to Gen Z'
`Unilever, which owns brands such as Surf and PG Tips, says it plans to halve the amount of new plastic it uses in a bid to appeal to younger shoppers.'
`In an interview with the BBC, Mr Jope said Unilever, the UK's biggest food producer and which also own dozens of health, beauty and cleaning brands, was trying to remain relevant to younger consumers who worry about plastic use....He said millennials - normally thought of as those born between 1980 and 1995 - and Generation Z, which is more poorly defined but generally considered to be those born between the mid-1990s and 2010, cared about "purpose and sustainability"....They also worry about "the conduct of the companies and the brands that they're buying".'

I'm always pleased to see things done to increase sustainability but find it offensive that Unilever thinks it's only `young' shoppers who care about the environment, recycling and sustainability. I hope thousands of oldies will get together on Facebook, Twitter or wherever and give Unilever a good haranguing for this attitude! :furious:

Seems it's Baroness Boothroyd's 90th birthday today. She lives nearby, and I used to see her in Tesco quite often, but not for a while now. I remember wine used to feature in her trolley.

She once autographed her till receipt on request from my lad who was working on the till. We framed it and put it on the mantelpiece.

Happy birthday Betty.
