Not really but I would have to have a heart of stone to refuse Gloria, Ian and P their result. Logic was dead right, Norman Stanley Fletcher. Fletcher is an arrow maker and that's what is happening in the image, using a tool made from deer antler to check and adjust the straightness of a blank that will become an arrow. (Good clue wasn't it. )

Thanks for extracts from the WW1 book, Plaques. My photo came from `Armoured Warfare in the First World War 1916-1918' by Anthony Tucker-Jones, published by Pen & Sword Books Ltd. I bought it reduced to £4.99 in our local museum shop but I was lucky. A quick scan of booksellers on the Web shows it at about £12 upwards, e.g. Book Dep.

For measuring circumferences. I'm not sure if it gave the circumference as a direct measurement or the equivalent diameter, I guess it could have been marked up to do both.

That's close enough P. Commonly used by wheelwrights to measure the circumference of a wheel which equals the length of flat bar needed to make an iron tyre for the wheel.Known in the trade as a 'traveller'.

Northumberland it is. This photo was taken last year but my first visit was almost 50 years ago. Can't believe it.

A mechanical type of clue. There is a water turbine of the same name but presented in the french manner.
