Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
Ah, so you are the mystery Pratchett book rustler. Every time I go into Colne I take my Pratchett list and buy up any I haven't got. There are 41 in the Disc World series and others which follow a similar theme and are quite good. 'The Long Earth' is one which I've passed to Stanley. Dodger is one I haven't got so don't you dare to give it away without asking me first.
I've another 5 ready for Stanley.

This one is a hard back and looks untouched, Colin must have been given it as a present. He never gets round to reading books these days, all his reading time is devoted to Private Eye.

Mort, I think you may like that one. Pratchett gets a bit philosophical towards the end.

Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
I am deep into Merlin's book and it is mind-bending. I don't think I have ever read a book that contained a fraction of the new information I am getting about fungi.
What I like is that the new things I am reading reinforce my own experience and observations, particularly in matters of soil health. I wrote an article for the Food Magazine on the advantages of mixed farming called 'What's the Beef?' and realise now that what I am learning bout fungi is part of the story I was unaware of.
Yesterday I read about a woman who was puzzling about how the fungi and plants could manage a relationship for billions of years and never getting it out of balance by introducing inequality. Then she read Thomas Piketty's book on Economic Inequalities in Society and realised that what he was talking about was a series of strategies that the fungi had been using for all that time. I rang Martha, my go-to economist and told her about it. She is going to get the book and read it!
A brilliant, well written explanation of a very complicated subject. I recommend it to all of you. Your life depends on what is in this book.

Just checked with Lancashire Libraries listing. None currently in stock but plenty of branch library orders. I've placed a reservation.

Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
I've finished Merlin Sheldrake on Mycorrhizal Fungi. A wonderful source of brain food. All new to me and I'm so glad I found it.
I have started on Sassoon on the Mona Lisa rather than plunge back into Pratchett. Not quite ready for fantasy at the moment!

Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
I am still wresting with Sassoon on Mona Lisa but will admit I am losing the will to live. Immensely informative and erudite but there is so much of it! I am sure it would do me good to finish the book but I wonder if I have the strength of mind to do it when I have Pratchett on Money sitting there waiting.

Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
Still ploughing through my pile of Pratchett books. Not all of them are from the disc world series. I must admit that some of them are difficult to read and have a very weak story line even if you accept the fact that it is all fantasy. The only thing that keeps me going is the humorous asides and the horror that my alternative book is about Trump.

Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
I regret to report that in an unguarded moment I read the first page of Pratchett on Money. That did it. An executive decision was made, I know quite enough now thank you about the Mona Lisa. I have ditched Mr Sassoon and am into Money.

Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
Enjoying 'Money' and I solved a problem that has been nagging me. I was talking about Gresford colliery the other day and knew I had a book but couldn't find it. A thought popped into my head yesterday and I went into the shelves and straight to it. Wonderful how the brain works. That will be next on my list. Now the question is, do I have a book on Aberfan? It's the anniversary of that event on the 21st of October. (It was 1966).
I have a question Ken. Would you mind if I put my used Pratchetts into the local hospice shop?

Re: READ ANY GOOD BOOKS LATELY?
Pratchett books to Hospice shop or Bosom Friends. No trouble at all. The first six of the disc series were generously passed on by Wendy. There's always a big demand for them at the Samaritans in Colne so I see no problem in letting Barlickers having the first chance at them. Should fly off the shelves like hot cakes.

In these strange times we are trying to restrict donations to clothes. We sell very few books but series books are more sought after and we find are more likely to sell.
