Gloria, I'm not sure but I doubt if Fairbairn ever took out a patent for the twin flued boiler because there were such boilers before. All he did was take all the other ideas and perfect the design. He must have got it right because the boilers are still in use today in many plants. Dan Adamson varied the design by improving the furnace tube rings and Galloways did the same by installing vertical circulation tubes in the back end of the furnace tubes. All the boiler makers started making Lancashire Boilers because everyone wanted one, they were such a good design. Incidentally, one of the great advantages was that the fires could be topped up alternately in the days of hand firing so that the flames from the clean fire ignited the black smoke from the green fire that had just been stoked and made for more efficient burning. This happened in the explosion box at the back of the boiler so-called because that was what happened in many cases. I could go on of course!
