Morning Sue.... Yes I saw the forecasts for snow in Scotland and they are forecasting the same is possible here later in the week. I hope your journey goes well and that you have a good time in Edinburgh.

Image

I started the morning by making sure the cylinder was sitting on the target face of the bed with the valve face perpendicular to the bed. Then I fitted the piston after packing it with soft packing. When I had that in place I put the soft packing in the piston rod gland and then mounted the cylinder on the bed. Once that was done I used the piston rod to mark the end face of the crosshead, drilled and tapped that 2BA and then fitted it with the piston rod engaged. As expected it is a tight fit but that was to be expected and can be adjusted in subsequent fitting operations. Lastly I refitted the normal everyday cutter in the vertical mill.
Once again, steady progress and no mistakes..... I shall take a view tomorrow when I start.

There isn't much too see Sue! You go past a golf course, a few houses set in trees then the wooden village hall right by the track and you are past it.

Nothing as exciting as a golf course here! I shall be in the shed at 06:00 and then after second sleep I expect Robin my chiropodist to come and give my feet a treat! That's about the height of today's excitement.... :biggrin2:
Later, snow is being forecast for Sue and Bob today.....

I can't go any further with the crosshead until I am ready for making and installing the connecting rod and before I do that I have to install the crankshaft in the pedestal bearings. So this morning has been a lot of milling to get the brass stock square and the right size. That included touching up the cutter to ensure it was sharp and a lot of careful thinking, measuring and marking and yes I know I am slow but I know my limitations and have to make absolutely sure I am right before doing any cutting. I'm ready for the rest of the cutting now.....

Morning

Yes Wendy, we are at the Premier Inn on Princes Street, straight across from the castle and the market. Its 10 minutes walk up from the station and thus very accessible. We had a walk down the market last night, very colourful. There are a few stalls of local produce, many fairground rides and food and drink stalls. Very colourful and quite an atmosphere. I doubt we will buy anything other than lunches, but it was enjoyable to walk round.

Its very cold but dry. Today we are going todo the open top tourist bus which we can catch from round the corner and depending on that we will do local tourist things. We are meeting Emma this evening for a meal and a chat.

Have a good day all

I was never taken by the inside of the castle, its mainly military stuff (which i suppose is to be expected) though the outside is very impressive. The Museum of Childhood on the High Street used to be a favourite place of mine as was Jenners department store, but I don't know if that is still being restored after the fire.

Morning

No snow here but very cold. None is forecast today. There is some in the air but nothing of any note. We met a lady from Sunderland yesterday who came up yesterday morning, she said it was snowing heavily in Newcastle. Today is forecast the same as yesterday. As it was so cold we did a lot of our travelling around in tourist buses. It kept us warm and we learned a lot about this beautiful city. We did have a lovely walk around in the old part, and in the evening we met Emma at her flat then went out for a meal together. Its like San Francisco long steep hills going out of the city towards the river, which meant a long walk back up hill at 10.00 pm last night. However, despite Emmas concerns for us oldies, it was not as arduous as our walk back home from the bank in Rochdale. Emma is well and is busy making new work connections from her new work base.

Today is St Andrews day so its free entry to many places like the castle which we are booked in to this morning, and we shall ‘do’ a museum this afternoon. Wendy the shop you mentioned is indeed closed following the fire and is all boarded up. It is however no longer going to be a shop but is due to be a hotel.

There is too much to photograph here, I don’t know where to start so have ended up not taking any. Its a beautiful interesting place and I have to say I remember little from my numerous visits as a child. We shall make the most of today. Yesterday we did 16000 steps despite spending a lot of time on tour busses

Have a good day all

That sounds like a good day Sue and slightly surprising that you had no snow. (I am not wishing it on you!)

Image

The morning started with a small problem, the 5/8" end mill was nowhere near sharp and so I had to get into the Clarkson Tool and Cutter grinder and rectify that. That was half an hour gone by the time I had got everything to my liking. I cut one side of the two bronze bearings and will cut the other tomorrow. Time spent sharpening tools is never wasted particularly if it's a milling cutter!

Morning

Morning

Still no snow here. We will up and out prompt as our train to Bolton is 10.10 a.m. we shall buy a sandwich on our walk down to the station.

Yesterday was a full on tourist day with sight seeing at the castle in the morning, with a shared afternoon tea for lunch in one of the cafes there. I agree with Wendy, it was all very military orientated with very little about its history pre English occupation. We had an afternoon at the museum of Scotland. This is a very well set and beautiful building but once again slightly lacking in any history of the tartan clad gentleman pre 1740. If there was, we did not find it. We did see the Crown jewels

……Just found out our train cancelled…..we shall see what we shall see…

Nice meal out in the evening at a local bistro.

Have a good day all

I heard there were rail strikes this morning on the news. I hope you find a way round that one Sue!

Image

Today was more work on the complicated little job of fitting the bottom brasses to the sockets in the bed where the pedestal bearings live. This included putting the witness marks in for identifying which brass goes where and refining the sockets in the bed so they are deep enough to accept the full bearing. I am at the stage now where I can fit the top brasses and then we can finish this job but there is more to do yet!

Today I have mainly been defrosting the car then round to the centre to pick up a car full of stuff for tonight's Bosom Friends Christmas Shopping Fair at the Civic Hall. Fridge is loaded and all the glasses are in situ. Might need to give those a rinse this afternoon. Home for a bit of lunch then back round with all Sally's stuff for her Alley Cat stall. Mulled wine can be heated tonight then into the slow cooker to keep it warm.

I had been using an old quilt cover to keep the frost off of mine but it was soaking wet after a couple of days use. Not good to keep in the boot.
I ordered an extra large cover, with a waterproof bag. Hopefully that'll be better, the thought of scraping the windows, at 06:30 on a frosty morning, has no appeal :good:
