Spam email

Just received an email from someone I don't know (and don't want to know). Apparently offering myself and another recipient copied into the mail, "Information that no one else would tell me". It included a link to reveal all of a mysterious benefactor who apparently has gifted me a very large amount of money. Sent from a Google mail address, that one went straight to blocked senders and the junk folder.

I answered a land line call while I was dealing with that. Featured in the other thread.....Cold Calls

I'm totally ruthless with mail these days. I got one from a named sender I recognised the other day but all it contained was a link. Straight into the junk box.

Classic spam email this morning purporting to be from Talktalk and giving me final warning that my email account is to be terminated today. Guess what I did with it!

Phishing email this morning from (not), Lloyds Bank for account details etc. Like exactly the same one supposedly from the Halifax, I don't have accounts with either of them. I'm fairly sure that they don't use gmail addresses either.

I get them quite often purporting to be from Lloyds and wanting account details. They must work for some gullible people!

A new one for me this morning from Vectis Auctions who apparently are collectible specialists. They say I need a password change for access to their new website. This password reset also requires me to register a credit card with them to settle any invoices for purchases. I don't remember ever registering with them although they look like a perfectly normal company. First email I have ever received from them. I'll not bother.

Email supposedly from Santander this morning (taltalk mail address) asking me to confirm account and credit card information. I don't bank with them either. Marked as spam and into the blocked senders list.

We've hardly ever had any spam, let alone dodgy messages, for ages. Perhaps we're not regarded a good enough target!

I think the providers get more and more adept at spotting them Peter. Talktalk is certainly very wary! It will class good mail as junk at times....

I just had my second spam call this week in Chinese. Quite a long spiel which I did not understand. The number was flagged as 'possible spam' but "Who called Me "' Have had no reports of either number used - which look quite ordinary mobile numbers.

I've looked a few teach yourself Chinese videos on Youtube recently - can there be a connection? I've got this far -and that's probably my limit. They surely can't have my phone number though. Being acutely curious - I'm tempted to ring it back.

What does Nee Hao mean?

You say it as 'nee hao' and you often see it spelt 'nihao'. It means “hello” (literally “you good”) so you know when / where to use it! Make sure you say it with a smile and you will most often get a smile back from your Chinese guest.

Another cheery Chinese language call from my new friend. Different UK mobile number. She started by saying Nee Hao to me, followed by a lot more. I called the number - it said she was busy and invited me to leave a message. I find she is called Ban Kung Lee as best as I can tell.

Not the worst spam experience I've ever had . . . .

Kevin, re. the spam email we discussed. I rang the lady concerned and she is in hospital recovering after a successful operation. She knew about the spam and says that she has been told it is a common consequence of using the hospital wi-fi.

What Kev is referring to is the fact that what put my hackles up when I first got the message was the awkward use of language. My friend would never be guilty of that. Have a look at it and see if it would have alerted you.

The scam came in a follow-up mail. I was to buy an Amazon gift card and send it to an address I would be given. The excuse was that my friend's card had been rejected. All lies of course. There are some very wicked people out there....
