I read that Michael Gove is to be the new editor of The Spectator. I've subscribed to the publication (off and on) for a long time and I have even surprised myself at the speed with which I cancelled my current subscription.

Change Andrew Neil for Michael Gove? Not a chance.

November the 5th is approaching - this might come in handy. It's a page from my mother's hand written recipe book. A bit short on method detail though.

Does anyone know anything about chillies? My neighbour gave a a small plant, I put it in the window behind the kitchen sink and it's grown a fair bit. It flowered and is now producing chillies but I have no idea when to pick them.

I did something similar a few years ago. Mine were red and longer than yours seem to be. I got a good crop and picked them when the looked "done". I rarely eat fresh chillies and they just dried out, so I put them in a jar. It looked quite good on the unit. They survived, and were in an eatable condition when I threw them out a few years later. :laugh5:

Kev, are chillies or capsicums… you might know capsicums as bell peppers.🤔

I think they will tell you if they are distressed. As long as they look healthy you can let them grow.

I think that like peppers (capsicums) they will turn from green to red as they ripen. Chilli peppers get hotter as they ripen so leave them to get red! Looking at the shape it's possible that yours are the Scotch Bonnet variety which are very hot!

Thanks Wendy, Scotch Bonnets did spring to mind when they started growing. I will be patient :good:

Kev, you can see by this pic why I asked if your Chilli plant was actually a Capsicum plant.
Chillies (hot) and Capsicums (heatless) are related.

I think the red, green and yellow ones I buy are described as 'sweet peppers' and are not excessively hot. Are they a different article than hot peppers?

Capsicum produce Bell Peppers and Chilli Peppers. They come from the Solanaceae Family (also Eggplant and Potatoes.)
.
As I’m getting this info, I’m watching Gardening Australia and a story all about Solanaceae popped up… Spooky, 👻
