WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
My bi-monthly delivery of drugs via Royal Mail. I ordered them on Friday and was expecting Monday or Tuesday, they must be trying to keep up with Amazon by delivering on a Sunday

The fact I have almost finished another engine. I need to buy another set of castings for my daily occupational therapy!

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
THIS caught my attention.
Super-strength drugs linked to hundreds of deaths have been found in samples of fake medicines bought across the UK, the BBC can reveal. We found more than 100 examples of people trying to buy prescription medicines such as diazepam - commonly used to treat anxiety, muscle spasms and seizures - and instead receiving products containing nitazenes. The synthetic opioid drugs have been connected to 278 deaths across the country in a year, according to the National Crime Agency (NCA). Nitazenes can be stronger than both heroin and fentanyl, a prolific killer in the US. Martin Raithelhuber, an illicit synthetic drug expert from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime, said the BBC’s findings were a “very worrying development”.
The rest of the article is worth reading because there are accounts of deficient border controls and testing once the drugs have been discovered.
Breaking news at 04:30. Israel has banned UNRA form operating in Gaza. More will follow later. This is disgraceful....
How can anyone deny that this has all the hallmarks of genocide in Gaza? Can I remind you that we are supporting them? Is this because we are afraid of being described as anti-Semitic?

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
They are saying that releasing the terrorism additions to the charges faced by the alleged Southport child murder suspect has been timed close to the budget, so it will not attract a lot of interest. I think it's actually the reverse, and has been timed as a distraction from the budget.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
There is no doubt in my mind David that the budget is going to be a stinker. Labour are taking the advantage of a piss-poor Opposition to get all the bad news out now. The theory being that from then on they can be nice guys and gain in the popularity stakes. Cameron and Osborne tried the same trick and look how it backfired on them. I think you are right about the trial, the spin doctors will rake the bottom of the barrel to try to ease the pain of the budget.
Talking about pain, I mailed Bob yesterday and told him we were all praying for Kamala to win. I got a reply this morning.
"Thanks for your prayers. But maybe you can try a rain dance!!! Anything!!! This is UNBELIEVABLY bad. Harris is probably the best qualified candidate we’ve had, ever. But too many seem to prefer the orange monster of Maralardo. Bob."

This is the third day I have opted out of my occupational therapy in the shed but it's not bothering me in the slightest. I am waiting for castings to arrive and they will most likely be here today. I kept putting off ordering them because I hate spending money!

It's not as pretty as Ribblehead. Stone construction will outlive concrete any day.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Certainly not as pretty but a significant and impressive use of 'mass' concrete (no steel reinforcing). There's a plaque on it that mentions the builder, Robert McAlpine.

Fedex delivery kept me waiting. They said 08:00 to 12:00 but it was 13:00. I kept busy but it felt like 5 hours wasted. £19.50 delivery charge as well!

Not today but a few days since... Jay Blades, omnipresent presenter of Money for Nothing and the Repair Shop.
Nobody is saying anything, presumably because the case against him is sub judice.
Copied from the BBC site....
BBC presenter Jay Blades has pleaded not guilty to engaging in controlling or coercive behaviour towards his estranged wife. Mr Blades, who fronted primetime show The Repair Shop, was charged by police last month. His wife, fitness instructor Lisa-Marie Zbozen, announced the pair's relationship was over in an Instagram post on 2 May. Appearing before Judge James Burbidge KC at Worcester Crown Court, Mr Blades entered his plea at a hearing on Friday.

This danger was evident from the start of the DNA testing boom...
`DNA-testing site 23andMe fights for survival' LINK
Three years ago, the DNA-testing firm 23andMe was a massive success, with a share price higher than Apple's. But...it now finds itself fighting for its survival. Its share price has plummeted and this week it narrowly avoided being delisted, external from the stock market. And of course this is a company that holds the most sensitive data imaginable about its customers, raising troubling questions about what might happen to its huge – and extremely valuable – database of individual human DNA....
"...It's worrying because of the sensitivity of the data," says Carissa Veliz, author of Privacy is Power. And that is not just for the individuals who have used the firm. "If you gave your data to 23andMe, you also gave the genetic data of your parents, your siblings, your children, and even distant kin who did not consent to that," she told the BBC...

I can see the problem. I have always rejected any DNA testing for that reason. There is no pressing need for me to do it and so I shall not change my mind.

The thing that has been nagging me for a while now is an advertisement on ITVx for Domino Pizzas. One or other of the characters in the sketch says 'Domino hoo hoo'. Can someone put me out of my misery by telling me what it's all about?

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
I was interested enough to set the clock for 4.00am, the advertised time, for the race over here, but there was no mention of it on any of the news channels that keep me company during the night, desoite frantic button pressing. . Went to At the Races on the phone, and the card was there but not the result. Gave up.
Decided that I was mistaken about the time, and it was probably tomorrow. Not so much interest to Poms now, as I think they have made the entry conditions less favourable. We were getting too successful. The winner started at odds of 100/1.
*******
The Domino advert started with this one - who knows what goes on in the tortured mind of the highly paid advertising executive. I thought it was the most cringeworthy commercial I'd seen for some considerable time. They are trying to get us to understand the concept of "group ordering". I think you can get them without actually yodelling - but don't buy one whatever you do - you will find yourself simultaneously under nourished and obese.
The hero film depicts a hilarious portrayal of a young man rallying up his friends to order a Domino's. The film begins with him on his balcony unexpectedly yodeling “DOMIN-OH-HOO-HOO”. A subtitle helpfully translates this to “Domino's round mine?”.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Something came into my mind this morning and I went back into me memoirs to read about it, to be honest I wasn't quite sure whether I was dreaming. Here's what I found.....
Back at the farm we were now without any form of transport. I decided we had better do something about this and so I bought two moribund Ford Anglias. The idea was to make one good car out of the two so I set to work in my spare time. I partially succeeded in the end but have to admit that even when I had finished, our ‘new’ car left a lot to be desired. Nevertheless, we were mobile and visits to my sister in Stockport and shopping trips to Burnley became possible. It’s perhaps indicative of how little I thought about the result that there is no picture of it in my negative files!
At this time I would occasionally go to work in the car if it was raining or if I had an errand to run during the day. I was going up towards the mill one morning and met Raymond Rance coming the opposite way in a brand new Morris Marina! This absolutely incensed me. Here I was, doing everything right and as honest as the day was long and there was Rance, who still owed me for the timber he had stolen off me and gone bankrupt into the bargain, riding round in a new car while I was trailing round in a scrapper! I couldn’t help tending towards the conclusion that something was wrong somewhere. A few days afterwards, Vera and I had been shopping somewhere Burnley way and as we returned home over Whitemoor Vera asked me why the car was making a funny noise. I told her I suspected it had broken in two and the noise she could hear was the gearbox dragging on the floor. I got it home, had a look underneath and welded in a temporary solution but my mind was racing now!
I went to several people who’s opinions I respected and told them of my problem and what I had in mind as a solution. They all agreed that I was thinking correctly and so, after consulting with Vera I sold the big field to our neighbour, young Sid Demain and went out and bought a brand new 12 seater diesel Land Rover Safari! It cost £4,800, more than twice what I had paid for the farm but was a wonderful investment, we were really mobile now. My idea was that it would be a safe if not speedy vehicle, it would have plenty of room for the kids and it could be used for other purposes as well. I could see that the mill wasn’t going to last for ever and a good utility vehicle like this would make an ideal mobile workshop. Old Arthur Entwistle thoroughly approved and we got to the stage where we went on visits to see him and Amy and eventually stayed at his son’s house as well. The kids thoroughly approved the new Safari and Margaret washed it every time. She used to come across to the mill to do it because the water drained away better there.
Shortly after I got the Land Rover I did something which even I find hard to believe now. Vera came out to the workshop one Saturday morning a couple of months after we had got the motor and found me lifting the engine out of it! She asked me what I was doing and I said I wasn’t satisfied with the engine, they had built it wrong and so I was going to strip it down, rebuild it and see if it was any better! She didn’t argue, she left me to it but I can well imagine that even Vera thought I’d gone too far this time. It took me two days but I completely stripped the engine and rebuilt it with one or two adjustments to my own specifications. I should say at this point I wasn’t working completely in the dark. For some time I had been reconditioning Rover diesel engines for Walt Johnson at Crawshawbooth where I had bought the motor and had gained a lot of insight into the basic faults of the engine. Walt always said my rebuilds were better than Rover’s. When I had it laced up together again I took it out for a run and what a difference! It ran quieter, had more power and used less diesel, game set and match to Stanley! (Could it have been an issue of control?)
Years later, Margaret my eldest daughter was at the Royal Show at Stoneleigh in Warwickshire and she saw our old Safari parked nearby, (she never forgets a vehicle number). She went to the bloke who was sat in the driving seat eating his lunch and told him that her dad had bought his motor new. He said he’d like to meet me because he wanted to know what I had done to the chassis that had made it virtually rustproof. She told him I’d filled it with steam engine cylinder oil. She also said I’d rebuilt the engine while it was new and he told her that the engine had only had one set of injectors and a new pump and it had done almost 300,000 miles and hardly burnt any oil, I reckon I must have got that one about right!

Nice to have that memory confirmed.... Thanks Margaret!
What got my attention was a reply this morning from Bob Bliss to my mail offering condolences.... He thanked me, said the condolences help. His verdict is succinct.... 'Surpassingly awful'.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Have a look at THIS and take note......
A DNA-testing firm appears to have ceased trading - without telling its customers what has happened to the highly sensitive data they shared with it. Atlas Biomed, which has offices in London, offered to provide insights into people's genetic make up as well as their predisposition to certain illnesses. However, users are no longer able to access their personalised reports online and the company has not responded to the BBC's requests for comment. Customers of the firm describe the situation as "very alarming" and say they want answers about what has happened to their "most personal information". The regulator, the Information Commissioner's Office (ICO), has confirmed it has received a complaint about Atlas Biomed. "People have the right to expect that organisations will handle their personal information securely and responsibly," it said in a statement. Experts say it shows how users of DNA-testing services can find themselves "completely at the mercy" of such companies when it comes to protecting very sensitive data.
I would be very interested to know if there was any trace of Australian Aborigine ancestry in my DNA (Family history says there is....) but have always been wary of giving anyone access to it. I recommend you do the same.

Re: WHAT ATTRACTED YOUR ATTENTION TODAY?
Google has decided that I need to know about the Chinese city of Chongqing. Can't say I had particularly noticed it before. Seems that subject to how you define 'city', it's actually the biggest city in the world!
Can't think how I missed it.
Can this be real - or is it AI? If I was younger I'd go and have a look. The air fare compares favourably with the cost of a peak period return rail ticket from Manchester to London. Why are we worried about the Chinese? What possible reason would they have for wanting to invade us?
