It pains me to have to mention it but have a look at THIS BBC report....
Chester: The city's Christmas lights will arrive in the city on Friday 15 November.
The article goes on to list other venues where turn-on of the lights is imminent.
Is this a form of distraction therapy?

In the interest of energy-saving and cost they could have them on only for alternate nights! :extrawink:

No chance of that Peter. In a retail recession they are looking to the annual con-trick to boost sales and save their bacon.....
(PS. did you note the first outbreak of bird flu reported in Yorkshire? Ersatz worries about a shortage of turkeys can't be far behind!)

The large conical emitters in the Town square, the small ones on the lamp posts in Fernlea Avenue and the individual trees on shop fronts are all in place ready for the switch on tomorrow. I have no information on the sales of foil for lining hats but they will doubtless be up.

There will be no escape for me tomorrow as I have duty not far from one of the large radiators. Our charity shop has to close for the day and in return we have a free stall on the market where we will be running a tombola for group funds. If I am missing from the site on Sunday you will know that I may have had to take to my bed to recover!

I must ask David Whipp to see if he is obliged to produce EMF (Electromagnetic Field Exposure) proximity calculations for the environs around the emitters. :goodidea:

Licence Radio Amateurs are obliged to be able to demonstrate this information for their antenna arrays so I think it should be a given for public bodies like the Town Council to also comply.

I could do the calculations myself but the operating frequency and radiator design information needed appears to be a closely guarded secret. I wonder who is controlling that information!

There is potential scope with a metal framed market stall to create a Faraday Cage effect around the tombola stand, just need a 3ft copper earth stake and big hammer to knock it in. :extrawink:

I hope there are no ill-effects after your exposure yesterday Ian.
Susan told me something yesterday that I didn't know.... During her time as town Clerk for Earby she learned that the Xmas lights are all supplied, maintained and erected by a contractor. That was a few years ago but is almost certainly still the case. This must be a busy time of the year for them!

Depends how much your Town Council takes on. All the Christmas trees distributed and lit on the shops are in our Town Councils remit. Barlick Town Council is somewhat more proactive than Earby. Yesterdays switch on a grand example, the town centre was rammed for most of the day and evening and local traders and organisations that opened and those that contributed to the market must be please with all the footfall. I know Bosom Friends are as we had two different activities on the market, (tombola and children's prize every time game as well as cakes and pastries to buy) It was also Santa Fun Run Suit pick up and registration day at our Green Street centre.

Still a member Wendy, he was last on the site in September 2023 but didn't post. He quite often puts his drone video's of various flights around town on the local Facebook sites. Much easier platform for video's I suppose.

Black Friday is upon us! I fail to see how this benefits retailers. It may increase market share but surely at the expense of profits?

Colne Christmas lights switch on this Saturday. A sensible time to do it, it's almost December :good:

I thought that too, but it seems that it's tomorrow - Friday November 29th - the day after Thanksgiving, which is the fourth Thursday in November.

It seems to have been hanging around for ages this year. This American thing hasn't really caught on I'd say.

In case you missed it - there's always Cyber Monday next week to come.
