Wendy got it right. These hooks hung on what used to be called the picture rail which ran round the room just under the ceiling.
Now we need another object!

Sorry Gloria but no. I shan't let it hang on. It's a bull trough. They were made round so the bull could roll them round the paddock without damaging them when they got bored. Bit like putting toys in a budgie cage......
