Previous posts have merged into dialect and word meanings forum. But dahn sarf we do have a form of English as she is murdered that can be quite grating to listen to , sometimes though I have to "dumb down" my talking to make a direct, understandable, point. It is like learning different languages and I suppose Starmer's other comment about having (O Level ?) English Lang as pre entry to getting work in England might be a talking point. Perhaps Starmer should re-view Boswell , Johnson and Blackadder for dictionarisation of words in common use, and their meaning.

The Viking influenced part of England where root words differ I dont see as being "inferior" but it certainly different , even in the West Country the folk I knew from Gloucester managed to be Different to Bristol and by the time you are in Mid Devon or Mid Cornwall the differences continue.

In chess however -if you are winning for most of the game - then blunder near the end you get nowt. Just happened to Magnus Carlsen. He is not best pleased, and resigned - by banging on the board, knocking over the remaining pieces, and storming out. Not a good look.

Cricket is a team game though so it is the final totals when all team members have had a go. Chess is akin to other combat sports which are mainly one on one. I enjoy a gamer of chess but I would not consider it a spectator sport, a bit like golf.

Good point well made. The incident has certainly hit the news with mentions all over the shop. When the chap who stopped playing in the world championship, after four consecuitive wins, because he got bored with winning it, blunders in time trouble, and gets beaten by the latest champion who is just nineteen yeard old, there wiil be headlines.

I have just spent a pleasant couple of hours reading Stephanie Carter's new book o0n Elslack. As usual Stephanie is very modest about her book saying it isn't much good but Like Wendy, I am amazed at the amount of detail she has winkled out and furthermore, Knitted it into a readable account. One thing is certain, I know more about Elslack now than I did two hours ago!
I would recommend it to you all, it is the best source for Elslack that I have come across and should be on the bookshelf of anyone who is interested in the local history of the area.
Well done Stephanie!" You have done it again. Produced an accurate and readable account of a subject nobody else has been brave enough to attempt. I await the next one in about 4 years!

Just back from Tesco. Second visit of the afternoon.

I needed stuff that Aldi don't sell so made the first visit. Bought a bottle of Whyte and McKays - on special due to Fathers Day. Usual wait at the till while the operator finished gossiping with the lady at the next till, - no sense of urgency or attention to the job. Paid the bill - thinking that's a lot - ah well it's Tesco.

Got home found they had charged me for two bottles of whiskey ! Found the phone number to advise them and register a prompt complaint. There are nine options on the phone - none of which will let you speak to a human being. In fact they seem to relish not allowing it. Went back - thinking it's my word against theirs. I wonder what will happen.

Went to customer service - put my case. Lady took the receipt and dashed across to the security guard at the exit. Went into a brief huddle then came back and said- "that's OK we will refund you". Of course being me - I had to ask how he knew I was telling the truth. "He's just looked at the video scan of the belt and there was only one bottle".

Good grief. - They video record every transaction.

And who is financing the energy investment needed to support the storage they must use? That is a mind boggling fact if you think about it.
Talking about fertile fields for thought.... Try to imagine how our world would have been different if Labour hadn't won the General Election in 1945. Would we still have got the NHS and council housing?

My grand daughter Yiota has issued a challenge. I have to stay alive until December at least because with a bit of luck she will present me with another great grandchild. Refreshingly.... they have not asked what sex the baby is. I hope it stays that way!
And another thing.... I have had one of Wendy's ear worms ever since we discussed Major Houlihan and M.A.S.H., that theme tune is bouncing round in my head whenever I let it have a chance....
