Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Sounds like fun Ian! (Speaking as someone who still has her childhood farm animals safe in a tin.)
It turns out that it was John Henry Wilkinson, a gent from Leeds, who enjoyed long distance walks with his friends and kept journals of his travels. Alan Plowright, also a long distance walker has followed in John Henry's footsteps and presented a slide show with modern pics interspersed with old photos including some of the man himself and his friends in the Dales around the turn of the century.
Colne Library for me this morning. I'm having a break from my Doreen Crowther index and am copying out some sections from a book on the "Old Roads of Colne" by T Foulds. He transcribed a 1623 pamphlet which contained a survey of the Ratione Tenurae roads in the area, listing all the landowners who were responsible for the upkeep of the section of road on their land. It is proof of the existence of the road over Pinhaw to Skipton in 1623. Interestingly, the road had come from Blacko and by-passed Colne coming over the Back o' the Edge to Langroyd and on what is now Castle Road to Laws (Colne Golf Club).

Making sure that if the forecast of heavy snow is right I don't have to go out in it tomorrow!

Making a hearty soup. Something with lentils I think. Trying not to worry about the lambs out there in my field...drifts already up to the top of the walls on the sheltered side.
Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Snowing here but very wet. It is not accumulating. My craft group in Todmorden is cancelled because it s bad over there. I was doing an embroidery machine demo but will now do it in two weeks.

Now I am worriting about the wee lambs, Wendy.
Could you not bring them ( and their mums) into the lounge and make them comfy on the sofa?
( I have a feeling I do not have the head for farming).

Met the neighbours out and about this aft and there's only one lamb missing. They dug in the drift where it's mum says it is but haven't found it. Col has been back to dig but no joy. The snow has drifted up to the top of the field walls on both sides....amazing really that only one has been lost so far.

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
When you think, the news on the snow is all about how traffic has been held up. Not a word about the thousands of people out there looking after animals. Modern priorities?

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
In the winter 79/80 I went out out with a shepherd in North Yorkshire to check on his sheep after heavy snow, he was able to see them under the snow by the outline on top, some I could see if he pointed out the subtle nuance, others I just couldn't see , but when he pushed in his thin stick they would be there, a true country man, afterwards whilst enjoying a pint he admitted he had a head start by knowing where they would lie.Wendyf wrote:Met the neighbours out and about this aft and there's only one lamb missing. Waiting to hear from Pluggy that the card reader has arrived. Reading and looking after Jack and myself!
Giving some thought to how I shall manage the changed situation at the BET. Can't stop writing! Problem is how do I make 500 words and a pic a viable proposition.

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
There are some good walks around Wycoller Sue. We often talk about doing the walk from Wycoller to Haworth, but haven't got round to it yet.
Over to Leeds today.

Don't be daft, I wouldn't get there in time. I run all the way....
Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
....I'd opt for the broomstick...
Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Yes we went with a book of walks round Wycoller, but the road had only just been reopened from snow drifts and the paths across the fields tended to disappear into drifts so we walked from the cafe and back. Lovely views, will definitely go again

Re: Today I shall be Mainly...
Pulled the tin tent out of the shed and gave it a bit of a wipe over today. We had bought a special product to clean the tinted poly-carbonate windows to the front and rear. I cleaned half of one window and went inside the van to see if it had made a difference...was happy to note it was quite significant, so proceeded with the rest. ( Febby thought I was quite mad and couldn't be bothered ). It was good to do a little stock take on the van at the same time though.
( I want to go away on an adventure now)
Also got the kayaks down from their hooks on the garage ceiling. They hang above the van. ( our garage is a Rubick's Cube!)
Planning to go kayaking tomorrow morning where the dolphins like to play...went there last week and really enjoyed it.
