My excuse about the temperature of the shed has run out! I'm on the verge of action, just old age and laziness that's holding me back!

Will do....
Some of you may remember Kirk Burwell of Hemingway Kits (LINK) who visited me and I gave him the patterns for the Pickles marine engine. At the same time I gave him a kit I bought years ago from Keith Hemingway for making a dividing head for the Myford lathe, the idea was he'd sell it for me. I decided this morning that he needed a nudge and had a reply straight away explaining that the reason he had fallen from view was that he had a heart attack. He is back in harness now, has sold the kit and will send me a cheque and was enquiring where the old thread had gone. I re-directed him.

Jack inspecting the shed yesterday after I spent an hour cleaning up, oiling shafting etc. Despite the cold the shed has survived the winter well, no trace of rust anywhere and everything in working order.

Image

I gave the remaining plate a cursory polish and decided that I had done enough on them. I'll have a measure up to see what size mahogany board I need for mounting a set and when I have decided on that I shall be making an unrepeatable offer, two of the plates to anyone who will make me tha backing board for the two I am keeping. If you're interested, flag up your interest and watch this space.....

Thanks for that Kev, I'll have a measure up and let you know how big the backing board needs to be. You get two name plates of course!
Kirk Burwell was as good as his word, I got a satisfactory cheque from him yesterday. Only problem is of course that now the HSBC bank has closed it emans a letter and a stamp to send it to Burnley. Progress?

Good evening all , looks like we have moved to a new spot  , I dont have too much to report, I have not been able to get anything else done on the lathe as been bogged down with other jobs but not took photos as just want them out the way so I can get back to doing the lathe.
Stanley if you are stuck I have some mahogony , I already have the plates :laugh5: so not wanting them but if you are stuck let me know and I will make two backing plates as was going to do some for my two anyway. I am busy carving a door number that I will post which is made from the same wood.
I am going to a staeam rally at Corbridge tomorrow so hoping to see some good stuff , its a good forecast so for once I might enjoy the day in the sun .

The shed looks in fine fettle Stanley ........all it needs is you in there now :laugh5:

That sounds like a good offer. Kev gets the plates whatever happens, let me have a measure and consult with both of you.... Mahogany is expensive stuff these days!
One of my visitors yesterday was John who is a fitter. He was blown away by Johnny's lathes but I was really pleased when he congratulated me on how clean and tidy everything was and the range of equipment and small tools. Nice!

Hi All , I have recently aquired a slotting head from Rob to fit to my Bridgeport mill, as per usual one job leads to another. Firstly the ram was solid when I tried to move it and I had to slide it to be able to swivel the head to fit the slotter, the slotting head was off a beaver mill and slightly different to the Brigeport mounting so a hole in the ram casting had to be enlarged.

After trying Wd40 etc , raw hide mallet, I resorted to the internet and found out the ram not sliding is quite a common problem and the best way around it seems to be clamping the ram forward with a sash clamp at each side and also trying to jack up the head slightly via wood blocks resting on the table and cranking the table to take the strain, well these did work but a right pain to do as the sash clamps want to pop off the curved surfaces of the ram and body and have to be turned one half turn each side and re set at the end of their screw thread travel, it would have been good to have been born with three hands for the job.

This is the sash clamp and wood arrangement, there was actually one clamp each side of the ram in the end to get it to move and the wood blocks were there to try and jack up to get releasing fluid to creep into the dovetails. I have at about half an hour to an hour per slide from back to front got it to move say 4 times and cleaned and oiled the dovetails as they stick out but its still only moving with the clamps, everything is loosened off etc , I am hoping the slotting head might balance out the weight from one end of the ram to the other and make it move better .
Image

This photo shows what needed to be done to make the slotter fit , the Bridgeport ram hole is smaller than the one in the Beaver mill bracket that is resting on top in the photo, making the hole bigger meant the slotter could use the original pin and collars , nuts etc.

Image

I turned up this tool , it fits through the original Beaver bracket as it is in this photo ( Beaver have a separate bolt on part where the Bridgeport has cast eye in the ram ) the tool at the lower end has the right size end to sit in the hole that is in the bridgeport ram and the top is turned to fit into a drill chuck, the bottom end has a tool steel cutter fitted to it.

Image

The bracket is then clamped with the tool in place this keeps the two holes in line and ensures the tool runs in the old bracket and widens the hole that is too small, well thats the therory anyway, I tried it and it was hardly cutting , Rob ended up kindly coming over to help me he reground the cutter and it was doing the job but still a pain and was flattening battery drills at some rate and wanting to burn out mains powered drill after a good while slowly keeping at it and keep charging battries it was getting there.

Image

This is the set up with the drill in place.

Image

The finished hole, after a clean up with a flap wheel so the pin was a nice fit.

Image

The bracket in position , it locks up as it should and is ready for the slotting head to be fitted, this has lead to the fact that the mill will need to be moved further out from the wall as there is not enough room to swing the head with the slotter fitted lol, another job to the list , I am going to make a jackable castor stand for the mill so its moveable in future.

Image

Rob deserves a big thanks for helping me get the bracket fitted , I had been at it all day and would have cracked up trying to get it sorted on my own so Cheers Rob I owe you one mate.

Did you ever get anything sirted for the mame plates wood Stanley ?

Cheers Mick.

Impressive Mick. Having a means of slotting has always been my deficiency, you have it in Spades now.
Thanks for reminding me about the plates, I'll measure them up today.....
Eyes getting worse but I saw the specialist yesterday and will have both eyes done within 4 months with a bit of luck.....
Mick, 18" X 11" would be fine. 3/4" thick would give enough for concealed fastenings for plates but beggars can't be choosers! Check with yours to make sure I have it right! Anything accepted. Big Kev still in line for the two plates.....

The slotter is fitted , well located would be a more apt term as its not wired up yet and the mill is now stuck in limbo until its moved forward as the head wont clear the wall or cupboard now :surprised: , I knew this would be the case and am planning on making a castored base with jacking points so the mill can be moved if need be, it will be worth doing just to be able to get to the rear of the machine for repairs etc............. so another project lol , as well as fitting two new inverters and the DRO, watch this space but dont hold your breath !

This is the slotter bolted on , swivels and locks up spot on.

Image

Image

The ram is still far too stiff to move with the bracket but will wait till the mill is moved before trying again anyway now.

Hi All, I have a new toy to add to the workshop, A smaller lathe, a Chester DB8 4 inch centre height and 14 inches between centres I think from memory. An old friend of mine was selling it due to getting too old for standing in sheds making things, so offered it to me at a good price. For once I have bought something that just works and has everything you need with it
The lathe has not had much use and from new has been fitted with Newall DRO and inverter drive, it also came with 3 jaw scroll chuck, 4 jaw independent chuck , 4 jaw scroll chuck, face plate , 2 & 3 point steadies , quick change tool post and 7 holders, change gears and a box of lathe tools, a quick clean and oil and its ready to go.............I think thats the first time I have ever said that !!

Oh and its on its own bench too.

It must be bloody perfect if it's passed your acceptance level!
Am feeling guilty about the shed but have so much on at the moment with site matters and getting the LTP back on line. Not helped by requests for help from an academic writing a book about the Anzacs but how can you refuse? Must sleep less and take the go-go pills!

Not really shed matters but just to update you - Dan starts his second week at Merc Engineering where he is doing all sorts of computer imaging for them... and getting paid. Could not have worked out better for him as the firm is only 10 minutes walk from home and does contract work for the aircraft industry. Nolic
