I've seen similar ones attached to graphics cards although it could be practically anything. Its just a lump of extruded aluminium.

That's right but what really interests me is the brass plate and where it was made for.

This one seems to have died. The clock was made by Johnny for Riley Street Chapel in Earby and when it was made redundant Johnny re-installed the clock in Wellhouse Mill. When that was demolished in 1982, Jack Gissing moved it again to the offices in Wellhouse Road. Here's another of Johnny's clocks. Question is for where?

A deathly hush.... It's the clock Johnny made for the new Catholic church in about 1932. Newton told me that when the lads were inside the church drilling a hole in the gable end for the dial shaft there was a bit of swearing because they only had a star drill and had hit a very hard piece of blue limestone. Johnny stood there in the chancel with his bowler hat on and a fag in the corner of his mouth shouting "Less bloody swearing! Don't you know where you are!". Try this one....

David! How dare you describe this very rare piece of kit as 'Heath Robinson'! You're right it is lathe related but what is it? (I've never seen one like it anywhere but it's a useful bit of kit.)

I'm a great admirer of Heath Robinson's work... now my guess is that it drives an old buffer!

I think you're near enough Glo. Yes it could be used to drive anything mounted on the cross slide of the lathe like a lap, a drill or a milling cutter. Normally, overhead drive means that the main driving belt to the lathe mandrel has to be disconnected but with this Mardrive unit it can be rotating as well.

There are circular marks at the opposite end to the slot; I guess it's the base of a stand for summat.
