Re: OBITUARIES
This doesn't have direct relevance to Barlick but it describes the passing of a special man in Bridgwater, Somerset.
`Tributes paid to Bridgwater 'legend', Ernie Elkins, of Elkin's Tyres' LINK
Elkin's Tyres is where I go when I want a new tyre or some advice on tyres and want to deal with good men and not get fleeced. They work in a good old-fashioned shed down a back street, next to a stream and where ducks paddle in the old bath that's used for testing for air leaks! First job the men do in the morning is to feed the ducks. Bridgwater reminds me of small northern towns, where people get on with life, no grumbling, and they appreciate somebody who is honest, does a good job and has fun. That photo of all those airmen standing on and around the Lancaster bomber is great!

Re: OBITUARIES
Nowt wrong with that Tiz, most of the obituaries have very little to do with Barlick. I agree with you about the small friendly firms.... They are a dying breed these days but could always be relied on, that was how they survived, by having a good local reputation.

The Duke of Westminster after a heart attack at his Abbeystead Estate, died at the Royal Preston Hospital aged 64.
I'd guess he was there for the imminent 'Glorious Twelfth' - opening of the grouse shooting season. Interesting to see that despite an estimated fortune of 9 billion pounds, (he really did have houses and hotels on Park Lane and Mayfair), he was taken to an NHS hospital.. The private health sector are not too hot on A&E.

Re: OBITUARIES
All because some female relation 250 years ago or thereabouts bought a couple of farms on the outskirts of London. One morphed into Mayfare and the other into Knightsbridge. Should be worth a bob or two to the treasury.

Unfortunately the NHS is set to become `not too hot on A&E' as they run out of funds and staffing. Some A&E departments predict they will have to restrict `opening hours' soon.Tripps wrote:.. The private health sector are not too hot on A&E.

A&E at Chorley has been closed for months due to the hospital trust being unable to recruit sufficient medical trauma staff to run it safely. Any prospect of reopening is months away.

Re: OBITUARIES
I think the value of the Grovenor Estate is mostly tied up in companies which no doubt spread the wealth around many family members. One of the more recent ancestors insisted that a number of its London sites had housing permanently for the 'Working Classes' (upheld by the Courts after Westminster council argued the working classes no longer existed). It was in the process of developing part of its London commercial estate though to higher rental payers of national chains rather than the more family run businesses , which I disagreed with. Either way, proves you cannot take it with you.Stanley wrote:My thought was that his £9billion was no protection against the man with the scythe.... Found out from my RSGB magazine RadCom that Brian Rix (Lord Rix) died in August aged 92.
Master of farce of course and long time licenced radio amateur, he held the callsign G2DQU held first in 1937 as an artificial aerial licence and was very supportive of the hobby.

Re: OBITUARIES
See THIS for a Guardian article on the death of Jean Alexander. I was never a fan of Coronation Street but always enjoyed her performances when I came across them, mainly in Last of the Summer Wine where she played the dotty aunt. And then of course there is the Hilda Ogden Memorial Flight of diminishing ducks with the last one in the line taking a nose dive..... I have two such flights, one in brass and the other of pottery geese, the end one always has its nose down.....
