I have to admit complete failure this morning. Here's a treasure chest that rarely sees daylight. I was looking for two brass brackets to go on the back of Mick's Plaque so I could fix it on the door into the shed. Mick hadn't got any and I could only find one.



So the plaque doesn't get installed. There was more. I thought I would give the door a coat of white paint before I put it up but couldn't face it so I gave it a good clean instead. All this took time and I had some cooking to do so I have accepted defeat for the day. Sorry Kids.....

Comms busy with good news but I found time to get in the shed and do some serious drill sharpening....



I never cease to be amazed at the way some people mutilate drills in the name of 'sharpening'. Here's a good example!



Only one way to deal with one like that, cut the end off and start from scratch! By 10:30 I had sharpened them all and found room for them in the respective drawers. All in the proper place and something like the right profile. I shall touch them up when I get them out to use them.

The label on the blue box says it all! Enough to keep me glued to the T&C grinder for a while. I found a home for a bag of metric bolts the lads brought me and considered what to do. I felt like a rest from grinding!



I decided to do something about the plaque as I have had no luck with mirror brackets. I put a clean tablecloth on the small surface plate so I didn't mark the polished face of the plaque and found some heavy strip brass. Into the vice with it and hacksaw two 3" lengths off.



By 10:00 I had made the brackets, countersunk the holes, de-burred them and sorted out some brass screws. (Have you priced brass screws lately. What a good job I have a good stock!) The brackets are heavy brass and took a good countersink easily. I shall attach them to the plaque and mount it tomorrow.....

I decided brush finish would be nice so I used the old trick of sharpening the wire brush bristles. See the stages below. Note the crap shop version.







I knew Mick would never forgive me if it wasn't central and level so I attacked like a job in the mill....

Today's task was clear, get stuck into this little lot. Slow going, many of them have been butchered!



I didn't have an adapter big enough for this one but then realised it was the same size as the bore that takes the adapters.... Obvious really but it took me a minute or so.... You know what I'll be doing tomorrow, taking it slow and easy! I am not on piece work!

I started this morning with the difficult ones, the metric cutters that are a fraction bigger than 5/8" which is the size I am on. I started by chucking one and reducing it with emery cloth until it would go in the Bush in the Clarkson T&C grinder, I did one before I realised that if I just reduced the thread slightly they would go in the bush and be held straight so I abandoned the re-sizing. No problem with them fitting in the 5/8" collet, I tried. One thing I noticed is that they were right about the capacity of the Taylor chuck to grip on a very small length of workpiece.



Here's the first one I ground down, it was OK but I didn't do this to the others/ Grinding a bit off wouldn't affect the concentricity in the collet because the metric part goes in and will align it.



I wanted to hold a cutter in the vise so I could chisel out the aluminium that had welded to it when someone used it blunt and overheated it but hit something that has been nattering me since I put these alloy soft jaws on instead of the worn out fibre jaws. The copper rivets I used were proud and interfering with the hold. Time to have them down flat!

Close of play. We have made some progress! The cutters on the left are sharp, the ones in the box are the smaller sizes, the ones on the bed of the milling machine are all 5/8" ready for shaving. I have done all the metric ones. It ain't easy and it ain't fast. There's a lot of difference between re-sharpening your own cutters that are the right profile and only need touching and doing other people's which sometimes need quite a bit of surgery to get them to the right profile before sharpening. Never mind, we're getting there!

Hi Stanley, I replied to this yesterday but it's no where to be seen ? Anyway good job of the Stanleys shed sign, it looks official now. I like your screw collection , it's the brass ones that are hard to get, in theory you can still buy them but it's just some sort of yellow soft crap they are made out of so hopeless anyway. I always look out for them at boot sales but not had any luck finding them for ages.
Keep up the good work and we'll done on the video getting so many hits

Glad the plaque has passed inspection! You're right about the screws, I saw the price of one 2 1/2" x 12 somewhere and had a fit, I have a full box.
The cutters are slow work, I am a swift kiddy touching up one of my own because the profile is right but some of these have been sharpened by very idiosyncratic blokes who knew better than the makers! Most common fault requiring multiple passes is a chipped land..... I shall keep quietly reducing them.

Browsing through some of the Doubleboost YouTube videos, Sunday Night Night Cap fifty eight, Mick's Carving. at the tail end of the video Mick was carving a replica soldier statue showing some of the techniques he uses. Did he ever finish it? I would love to see it on OG.

Apologies to the congregation, yesterday was a bit busy. I was in the shed at 8AM this morning cracking on with the cutters.



This one was a bit of a puzzle, no markings on it but from the way it reacted to the grinding wheel I suspect it's solid carbide. The wheel did an adequate job on the cutter so I marked it as carbide and put it in the drawer.



That cutter had taken a bit of meat out of the wheel so I got the diamond dresser set up and got it straight and flat again. One thing to remember if you do this, take the two or three degree offset out of the table before you dress the wheel. This ensures you get the surface dead flat. If you forget you'll dress the angle of the table into the wheel!



By 09:45 I had finished all the 5/8" cutters and so it was a good place to knock off. The one stood on its end is the carbide cutter. Tomorrow I'll have to buy a couple of good plastic storage boxes to store all these in!

Sorry Kids but this is the height of it today, all the cutters tidied up and put away. I'm not going to grind any of the smaller ones, I can touch them up if and when I need them. I forgot wear my mask yesterday and the dust isn't doing my chest any good!
I've nudged Mick about the soldier P. He says that when he has finished his present project which is for a competition he will do some more on it and give us an update.
