Do they open manholes (or person holes).

I can see why you thought that Cathy but sorry, no.

Are they different forms of steps? I'm thinking of those you would drive into tree trunks or telegraph poles.

Are they attachments to an anvil which help produce circular sheet metal objects?

For sticking in an anvil, not heavy enough for blacksmith or sheet metal work so I'll suggest silver smith tools.

Oh dear P! You have put me in a quandary here. You're thinking straight but you have the wrong conclusion. Too heavy for a silver smith. Have another think....

Ian has it. It's a selection of tinsmith's anvils. Different shapes for different jobs. They weren't for putting in the Hardy hole in an anvil but in a hole on a block of wood. Many of the tinsmiths were itinerant and a block of wood was light enough to go in the handcart.

That's correct Kev but there was another more interesting description.

Are you looking for a humorous jargon name or a technical name?

Curses! Her serene majesty has done it again. Quite right, old technology and I thought it would be a forgotten corner.
Back to the drawing board Stan[ey!
