How did they break the ice with the boat, did they rock it end to end or side to side?

Vertical posts on the boat were for rocking from side to side as it was towed along.

Similar then to the ice boats on the rivers and canals down here. A local one had a horizontal bar running down the length of the boat at a person's waist height. Men stood on both sides of the bar, grasped it and rocked it side to side. Thick ice on the River Severn used to be a big problem for the owners and crews of the wind-driven trows which plied up and down the river and estuary. The crews often left the boats, added ribbons and bells to their clothes and went Morris dancing in the local villages! All that changed and the owners breathed a sigh of relief when the coal-fired power stations were built alongside the waterways - warm water from the stations kept the river open in winter. Of course, they also benefited from a boost to the trade in coal.

Sorry but no to all of you. You're all on roughly the right track but not there yet. Clue, I thought Wendy would get this one! And remember, I want the unique name for it.

Other than the odd postbox this is the only piece of Edward V111 wrought ironwork on pubic display in Burnley or in Pendle. Does anyone know where it is?

Spot on Gloria and the correct name as well. Remember Pritchel holes in anvils?
Is the ironwork in Padiham Town Hall, I think it was built at about that time....

Spot on Stanley. The labour exchange on Finsley gate. Now under private occupancy. The last time I visited these hallowed halls was to register for my National Service.

Good P! That was a desperate suggestion....
Tiz, is it a look out platform on a harbour breakwater? On second thoughts it could be on a hill.....
