Not a warehouse, ballroom dancing, live theatre, music hall, prison, convent, monastery, toll house or custom house. It had no connection with entertainment, education, religion or military matters. Although it's not a warehouse Stanley is warm because it was used to store something. You'll need to put your creative thinking hats on because what they stored is not obvious from the appearance of the building. Inside it wasn't what you'd expect from seeing the outside!

Not ropes, Cathy, but you're right to suggest something that isn't stored in bottles, barrels, tins or boxes!

They remind me a bit of the 'fake' houses in Bayswater, in that there London, to obscure the underground railway but I don't think it's railway related. I'm guessing it's a water pumping station...

I think you are right, a Spa would account for the 2 separate buildings, male and female, necessary in Victorian times. I wonder if they would need 3 buildings now for people who don't believe what their chromosomes tell them?

I like Kev's suggestion, some of the sewage pumping stations / water treatment plants were built like cathedrals especially down London way.

My goodness, you lot have been busy! The bad news is that it's not an ice house, bath house, swimming pool, sewage pumping station or water treatment plant, water pumping station, spa or gymnasium. The good news is that you're getting very close. Kev is getting the general idea with his: `They remind me a bit of the 'fake' houses in Bayswater', but they weren't for housing people. You've all got carried away with the idea that they are connected with water but that isn't the only public utility!
