I like China's suggestion as well.
I've seen Brenda in silly hats but never a Jedi cowl! No, I didn't recognise her. Where does the image come from?

I'm with China regarding the rope slot.

It's from a pic that was in a lot of the 'red tops', she's looking out the window of a Range Rover.

Thank you Kev. All is now clear! I've reviewed the pic with that in mind and see now that I was right about the cowl, it's a rain hood! It completely baffled me.....

Gloria was right about a slot running across the road but the sides are not gates, they're the cast iron sides of the bridge. It's not a bascule bridge or toll bridge but is a foot bridge over a canal. China is correct - the slot is to allow the barge towing rope to be drawn through whilst still attached to the horse. Stanley was
almost right when he referred to the building as a bridge keeper's cottage. Have another try at the building and tell me which canal this is.

Stratford upon Avon?

Correct, Kev. What's unusual in the picture and characteristic of this canal, besides the slotted bridge?

Two things strike me. The unusual arched roof and rounded gable on the canal side, it appears to morph into a normally pitched roof behind and suggests a modification to an existing building. The other thing is that the canal looks narrow as though it was built on the cheap!

Following on from Stanley and the canal being narrow, couldn't see anything to substantiate this but, could it be a lock? The building, quite ornate in parts, arched roof, could it be for storage of grain, hops?? Just guessing really, it's another interesting one.

Kev has already worked out that it's on the Stratford on Avon canal. Stanley notes the `unusual arched roof and rounded gable' of the building and I wrote that he was `almost right when he referred to the building as a bridge keeper's cottage' and Gloria, knowing that it's on a canal, asks could it be a lock?
You're so close that I think it's time to wrap this one up. This canal is known for its unusual barrel-roofed lock-keeper's cottages and its split bridges, as well as other interesting items such as an aqueduct and bascule bridges. There are good photos of its present appearance here:
Canal (It looks like some of the same type of bridge either didn't have the split or it has been closed in modern times.) More detailed information is here:

For some reason Whitby abbey went through my mind.
I'm taking notice of my `first thoughts' today because I had one of those Trippsy spooky moments this morning. I picked up the phone to ring a local company to pay a bill for work done yesterday, I pressed the key for the first digit and my phone immediately did an incoming ring. I answered and it was the company I wanted to speak to!

Why is the 'n' the wrong way round and lower case? It must be in America.
