In the early days, I had set up my tree as private.
I was contacted by an overseas relative and I gave them permission to have a look at it. I was told afterwards, that as soon as you let someone look at your tree, it becomes public. I didn’t know that at the time. Someone changed a name in my tree and I was pretty angry about it ( because believing I may have made a mistake, I checked it out thoroughly and I had not made a mistake at all) so I took my tree down. Unfortunately, family members had by then copied the mistake and the mistake repeats itself to others. I can’t be bothered correcting them. If they had done their own research in the first place and not just blindly copied, I would gladly put them straight.
Perhaps security is better on Ancestry now, but I won’t take that chance.
I find Ancestry is over-priced for the info it offers, but it is still a useful tool. I don’t think I will be renewing my sub again though. I have another 3 months, so I shall work like a beaver until then, but not renew.

My tree has always been public, I have gone on lots of public trees but as far as i am aware you can’t change them. Perhaps the system has changed. I know of a huge error on some trees. I have contacted tree owners to explain and suggested they change it but they have not and I cannot . My maiden name is Marriott, not my blood line which is Widdup. John Marriott who was married to my great grandmother changed his name, remarried and mixed up his personal details with that of his cousin of the same name. Everyone has followed the line of the cousin, even though I have shown them the military documents that show this to be incorrect. I can’t alter it, only make comment. Not my problem however as John Marriott, later John Conquest is not related to me.

I like ancestry very much, I suppose it depends on what or who you are looking for. I find FIND MY PAST rather an expensive unhelpful site

Today I watched the sun come up at 6:15am CST and it struck me that it is still "yesterday" in your neck of the woods! Going down to Nanning at 8:00 am by shared car, 5 quid each, about the same as the high speed train with bus fares at each end. All cities here have these shared cars, they wait in a central place until they get 4 passengers and then go to a central point in the destination city, about the same price as the coach fare. We're going door to door because we have quite a few items and things that we cannot take on the train, like drills and sharp tools. Then I will be installing a gas cooker and a gas water heater and bits of other jobs. Tonight I'll be out on the town with a couple of mates! Away for 2 or 3 nights of fun! :biggrin2:

I was going to hang on with Ancestry until the 1921 census is released, but I believe that won’t be until (April?) 1922.
I have the International level of membership, as I have been doing my son’s fathers side also ( he is fifth generation Australian, but ancestors came here from England/Prussia etc.
Australian records are a bit hap hazard, with some states having free look ups, and others requiring money. Some state government websites are particularly difficult to navigate and few records are online. People were very mobile here in the early days of colonisation too. They rarely stayed where they had docked. A lot of the jobs available back then involved sheep and cattle droving, travelling vast distances with no real roots. Then there was the gold rush. Men dragged their families all over Australia looking for gold. Babies were born, died and were buried along the way.
My son has a great great grand mother who had 6 children to 3 different fathers ( 2 of whom she married). She had children born in 3 states of Australia! In fact, her last daughter ( my sons great grandmother) was born about 18 months after her “father” noted on the birth certificate, was swept away in a flood in the outback trying to save some horses. He was never seen again and presumed dead. But I found him! ( remarried in another state about 5 years later after making his way to the gold fields!) I know it is the right man, because he acknowledges the elder sister to the great grandmother in his will.
Australia was notorious for people simply “disappearing”.

Morning all

Yesterday turned out better than expected, after a few heavy showers in the morning, it dried up. Not exactly a sunny day but warm and fairly dry. So much so that we did get a 4.5 mile walk in the afternoon, after we cleaned the house in the morning. Some of the footpaths were very wet and muddy with large puddles but not impassable. We had our trip to the market and bought the usual plus extra croissants for breakfast with Claire and Adam, and one more plant for the garden. That will be the last one as the beds are now packed to the limit. The lovely man gave us discount as we wouldn't be buying at his end of season sale next week. Such advantages to shopping local at a small retail outlet. We rounded off the day with a U3A online wine appreciation group. We all had a bottle of Sauvignon blanc, from different shops and origins and quite different prices as it happens. Ours was Chilean from the Coop, and very pleasant it was too. Two had the same bottle bought from different Morrisons, one paid £6.50 and the other £7.50. There seemed no difference except palate-wise, one loved it the other disliked it .

Today has started sun and cloud and as of last night the forecast is to continue the same. I have yoga this morning, then it will be my weekly nice soak in the bath followed by pedicure, manicure. My chill out session of the week. I think in the afternoon I shall raid my fabric stash and make myself a cheerful top to wear on less cheerful days, of which we seem be having many this summer.

Have a good day everyone.

As a matter of interest I am finding oneguy very slow and temperamental at the moment. Yesterday it would not upload something I wrote, then the next minute I was logged out, but could not get back in. The message ket saying I had had too many attempts but had only had one. It would not accept my password, which the more I think about it, the more convinced I was it was correct. I had a chat with Wendy later to check nothing had crashed tried again but still could not get in. I had to try the FORGOTTEN PASSWORD route, which is now some long generated password which I hope my iPad remembers. When i did get back on I found my message had been posted . It was about my bit of research on the virus test.

Morning Sue! You're right about the site being a bit temperamental. It has logged me out as well but I haven't had any problem logging in again.

I have had a nice two hours in the shed and we are another step forward. All my jobs done and I am having my breakfast while listening to Broadcasting House, a perfect Sunday morning. I wish you all the same.

I get the impression that posting on tablets is a cause of many problems because I don't have them on the desktop but it's only a guess.

Morning

Maybe but I don’t have an issue on other sites , Stanley.

Its raining again, hard, and due to rain all day! Its a day to continue with indoor occupations. Yesterday afternoon I cut out two different tops from one piece of fabric, that I bought years ago in a fabric warehouse in France. I nearly finished one and shall continue and then make the other. They are straight forward patterns and I have made both of them three times before.

I have pilates this morning and this afternoon a conversation on whats app with my sewing teacher, Maxine, to discuss the alterations I did to the pattern of my jeans. That will be an hour! I thought I could talk a lot, but in this case I am lucky to get a word in. I may make a trip to the RANGE sometime as I need a couple of project folders. I am sorting out my art work and deciding what I keep and what I throw. The project folders with plastic wallets inside make excellent storage. I feel I have to brave the shops sometime, nothings going to change anytime soon, Monday or Tuesday seem like good days, usually quiet in shops.

Thats it, day done. Have a good day everyone, stay safe , stay DRY.

I had to change my trousers after the afternoon walk Sue. Got caught in a really heavy shower.
Aiming for the shed yet again, I am close to a finished cylinder.
An update at 07:30. The shed has missed completely as I have had to have a spell of cooking. Someone has to do it and I don't have a housekeeper slaving over a hot stove to feed me. If blokes had to pay minimum wage for these services would there be more looking after themselves? :biggrin2:

Morning

Rain all day yesterday then a sunny evening, too late to take advantage of. Today it is cold, 11-13 degrees maximum with more rain forecast. What a summer !

Yesterday I sewed all day and made two bright and cheerful tops. It was far too wet to venture out after pilates so I consulted the website for the RANGE and found their quietest time is this morning between 9 and 10 so decided to go there today instead of yesterday. In the afternoon I had a lovely long chat with Maxine, my sewing teacher on Whats app, well over an hour. In amongst the chat were the useful suggestions for amending my jean’s toile, which I did in 10 minutes later. Today I shall alter the paper pattern and cut out my next pair. I now have two lots of nice fabric, summery and cheerful but also thick enough to wear in this appalling weather.

Bob is out this afternoon clearing the workshop again. The idea is to get as much out as possible and have a table top sale at the clubs shed at the park on a Sunday sometime in the future for club members only if the social distancing criteria can be met ok. We are working on ideas. I say shed, there is a large expanse of grass where things can be placed more than 2 metres apart . There are all sorts of technicalities to overcome , no touching of goods, storage of anything left over and no touching for another 72 hours etc. A table top sale sounds so simple till you consider the implications.

So with Bob out, sewing will be my day or some other hobby. Pilates followed by yoga from 5.30 pm. I will have to potter in the greenhouse, I have tomatoes but with all the damp I think my plants have blight so I go down daily to cut the infected leaves off. Oh for a warm sunny day ! The forecast up until August 10 th is still mainly rain !

Have a good day everyone.

Expecting a delivery ( needs to be signed for), so I am not going anywhere until that arrives. Then we will do our daily walk.
Meanwhile I have made a two-night pot of Chicken and Veg Soup, so dinner is sorted.

Cooking is done, mischief managed! So I shall be in the shed working on the cylinder.
Later... I have made a good start to the day by cleaning and polishing my current shoes. The wet weather has been heavy on my old Regent brogues so I am resting them and wearing the Trickers. Look after your boots! If you do they will last and so will your feet.

Morning

Well yesterday turned out drier than expected but so cold and really windy. Frequent heavy showers made it difficult to dry the washing so it was the drier again. I did my trip to the RANGE and bought the art stuff I needed. It all went very successfully. I was impressed that all the staff were wearing masks, and there was a member of staff at the door by a table with sanitiser and masks. It wasn’t busy as both hoped and expected as I was there at 9.30 am. I had to browse, so once home I removed all the wrappings and disposed of them as I presume others will have browsed before me. This was my first visit inside a large shop since I shopped in Super U in France on March 14 th. I spent the rest of the day cutting out and sewing my summer, flowery jeans.

Today is another first . We are meeting our friends Wendy and Keith for lunch at our old haunt, The Shepherds Rest pub above Todmorden. Our usual table has been reserved for us with panoramic views over the hills. We love the place, a very old farmhouse converted to a pub, and the food which is a bit more than pub grub but at pub grub prices. We are all apprehensive but feel its a business, they need to survive so everything should be ok. Next week my pilates studio reopens but thats a step too far (sorry about the pun😆)so I am sticking to the online option.

So a bit of sewing this morning, leisurely lunch out, then chill out at home afterwards. Pilates is late today. I missed my double class yesterday as I had a bit of a gut flare up which happens every now and again, brought on by rich food the day before or the stress of thinking about going shopping. All well today. Its a side effect of my perforated appendix with complications some years ago. Most of the time I have it under control but flare ups happen periodically , its not always easy to work out the reason why. I will keep off the rich food at lunchtime.

Have a good day everyone

Yesterday I started to salvage any useful parts from a tumble dryer that had died on us, motor, switches and the odd sheet of metal, Stanley's treasure chest syndrome. Will finish off today and then to the dump at some time in the future.
In between rain showers I thought I'd do a bit work on the garden steps hand rail. Mainly cutting the bars to length and welding them in place. I'm absolutely useless at this arc welding caper, not enough Amps to use a decent size rod. But upwards and downwards as they say about steps.

Ken, you can do just as good a job with small rods. When I worked for Rochdale Welding it surprised me that the men who were repairing plate up to 3/4" thick didn't use heavy rods but did repeated runs with small rods at relatively low amperages. The secret was to grind out the top of the run before so you were putting the next run on pure metal. They said they got more fails on ultrasonic testing after the repair with heavy runs.
I am having a breather after 2 hours in the shed. Usual programme, walk Jack, have breakfast and post on Shed Matters.

I'm working on ½ square section wrought iron. On my cheapo welder the maximum rod diameter is 2.5 MM requiring about 60Amps at the welder which is touch and go on a 13 Amp fused line. 2 MM rod works but hardly puts any metal down so you go through quite a number of rods. I'll get there eventually.
