All good answers but Kev got it. They are standard regulation spurs for fighting cocks. Cock-fighting is legal in Peru.....

Culzean Castle on the Ayreshire Coast. Kev is right in that Dwight D Eisenhower stayed there. He was gifted an apartment for his WWII service as Supreme Allied Commander and head of SHAEF. It was part of a tax dodge by the Kennedy family who gifted the Castle to the National Trust for Scotland.

We had our frame tent damaged on the nearby Camping Club site in one of the worst gales ever recorded along that stretch of coast. Had to lash it to the ground in a heap with the roof bars spider elastic after the frame collapsed. That was a night to remember!

Ian has it! Pronounced 'kilain' castle.
Now, what's funny about the Girvan Road that passes it?

Ah, we toured through Ayrshire on a camping trip in the 1970s and probably visited the castle but I can't remember it now. What I do remember though is those palm trees (Cordyline australis) you see in the photo. They grow in many places on that bit of the coast due to the Gulf Stream's warming effect. They also grow here in the south-west and we had them in our last garden. We've planted young ones in the new garden. I also remember the view out to Ailsa Craig where they make curling stones out of the unusual granite found there.

The `secret walled garden' was found under the road in front of the castle. Walled garden

Is it a group of scientists on a research expedition to Antarctica investigating environmental change who have been criticised for putting the environment under even more stress?
