More in Wildlife than Pets but local ducks seem to be 3 Mallards Drakes chasing one female. 2 were fighting over her, one looking on hoping both would do each other in. Problem with the females is they nest in hiding places, which get disturbed unknowingly by the anglers on the riverbank

Making an alphabetic list of UK cities is one of my mind calming strategies when I wake up panicking at 2am!

I often wake at that time Wendy but it's not panic, usually a persistent disturbing dream. Last night it was a firm offering me free broadband access for a year as they were just starting up. I soon went off to sleep again though for another hour.
Cathy, I wouldn't worry too much about the duck. Knowing the way Wendy looks after her stock I'll bet it was above average life expectancy....

This isn't actually about pets but this seemed like a good place to put it. It concerns the current plague of mice in Eastern Australia. See THIS BBC video describing the problem.
What caught my attention this morning was hearing a man saying that the worst thing for him was the smell of dead mice rotting.
This took me back to Hey Farm. We were always a home for mice, a farm embedded in a populated area is always a mouse magnet. We learned about living with mice. If you hear them they are mice, rats don't pitter pat across the ceiling, they slither. Using poison is a bad thing. The mice die in inaccessible places and smell horrible for about five days as they decompose. It was that memory that chimed with the man this morning, he's right! It's a horrible insidious smell and never forgotten.
Our solution to the problem was to support a thriving colony of cats who lived in the barn. They were the ideal defence. They got the mice before they reached the house and ate them so we weren't bothered by the smell.

I was told the other day that they had a cat which would go out hunting mice, playing with them until it got tired of it, killing them, then eating them starting at the head and working through to the tail. Not a problem until it did its Poo when it stunk to high heaven. They had to rescue the mouse before the cat ate it.

Ken, I can believe it. Our cats lived in and around the barn so their faeces never bothered us.

Do you remember me posting a few years back, when Col was just recovering from his bladder cancer op, we had a dead mouse beneath the floorboards in our bedroom immediately under our bed. We had to decamp into the spare bedroom till Col was up to lifting the floorboards.
As the proud owner of 3 cats we often have to extract stinking rodent bodies from underneath the washing machine, fridge or freezer where they have scuttled after their attackers have brought them in and dropped them.

Unfortunatly cats in Australia polish off the slower moving smaller marsupials and birds. Cats (and Dogs) have a fairly inefficient digestive system, hence the need for flies, other insects and bacterial to finish the poo off. ( Dogs will eat cat poo for the high meat content if the cats have been fed tinned food). Quite where the likes of potential worm infestations arise I am not certain - the Dog Poo/Cattle inadvertantly eating is one, is Human/Pig another ?

Yes, I do remember the dead mouse under the floorboards. At Hey Farm we just put up with it because we were never quite sure which room the offending mouse had died in. One thing is certain, it's a lousy smell and you never forget it.

I do have an old photo from when I was still riding that's framed and kept in my work room.

Our rescue dog Bruce must be 13 or 14 by now and is suffering from arthritis in his back legs. I took him down to the vets a couple of weeks ago and was prescribed a 32ml bottle of an anti inflammatory drug which is now almost finished. I was charged nearly £24 for that little bottle which can be bought online for under £8.
I phoned the surgery today and have managed to get a prescription so i can order online, 180ml for under £24 including postage. I'm now waiting to see how much I'm charged for getting a prescription emailed.
