Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
No Gloria nothing as prosaic as that. Think on more esoteric lines. It's something you have come across before.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
I've been reading up on Zoroastrianism recently - so I'm tempted to say a 'Tower of Silence' .
That's what I'd like to say, but I doubt it is.

Is it some sort of Folly, obviously not an English one.
I know I'm in my own little world, but it's OK... they know me here.

Were prayers said from the top of the tower?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Collectively you are all on the right track and yes, Peter is right, prayers were said on the top. But you're not quite there yet. Think slightly eccentric... One last push.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Did they isolate themselves at the top of the tower? Praying, not eating or washing?

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
They prayed before they either jumped off or were pushed off. If they flew they would be shot down by archers if they didn't they were pure but dead. A bit like our ducking stools for witches.

Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
Three storey so probably weavers cottages, looms on the top floor. Don't know where.
Ian
Re: MYSTERY OBJECTS
The top floor was workshops, hence the large windows, and may have had looms but also other workshop activities. The important thing is who built the houses and where?

Stanley and Gloria are on the ball - houses built by Arkwright in North Street, Cromford in 1776. Part of the Derwent Valley Mills World Heritage Site. Well, that was over quickly - who's next?
