Ah! Kev has hit it on the head. Phosphor bronze balls are used in non-return valves because of the anti-corrosion properties and also because, being slightly softer material they can accommodate small irregularities in the valve seat. Now I have to rack my poor old brain again! Any6 ideas what this is?

Sorry, I forgot the scale. It's about half an inch square. Close, all of you, but not there yet.

Worming or vitamin tablet. Or, what is the tablet (phosphorus?) they sometimes give cattle when first out at grass to stop colic?

Wendy was on the brink and Ian got it. In the 1980s when I was in NY I was intrigued to note that New Yorkers trusted the Kosher Laws more than the FDA. Virtually all chickens sold in the city had one of these tags clipped to the wing to certify they are Kosher. Note also that the Union branch at the factory put their branch number on the bottom to certify that the plant was run using union labour.
I cheated of course by erasing 'kosher' from the Empire Kosher Poultry Inc at the top of the clip. Sorry.... Try this one....

Does it relate to a pilot or flying in some way?

You're right, it's a lapel badge. Very esoteric so a clue to the logo, think China.

You've suffered enough. When I was at Ellenroad we had a visit from a party of visitors from the town that Rochdale was twinned with. One of the men was the manager of the Datong Locomotive Works, they employed over 10,000 workers and at that time were still building some steam locos. The lapel badge is the logo of the works. Here's another, closely related and given to me at the same time. See if you can identify it. Think China and Railways....

When we were in Shanghai we went on the Maglev Train. It doesn't run on wheels it runs on electro magnets, is the badge something to do with that? It's a high speed magnetic levitation line.

Maglev - Professor Eric Laitwaite's linear motor technology given adequate funding to turn it into a practical system. Unlike our successive governments who, like with many other British inventions would not give the funding to forward the projects to usable applications.
It's a good guess Gloria and if it's not right it should be! The design is a good representation of the system.
