So were they army surveyors? Alternatively, if `piste' was a clue in your earlier posts, did they operate in the mountains and/or snow. Alpine surveyors?

You've got there. They are the wounded survivors of a group of men sent to the Western Front to do the equivalent of the Ordnance Survey here. (LINK)

Could it be for cable laying? The Agamemnon Or the Niagara?

You're in the right area Gloria but not those ships and that was not why it is where it is.

It's the SS Great Britain in the Falklands where it was scuttled in 1937 after being used as a storage hulk.

The official title of formation patch is to make it easier to get all similarly adorned ducks in a row, or many rows, so to speak.

Ian, we had no problem, we knew what they were and where they were worn. :biggrin2:
Peter. Sorry, no, can't understand why nobody went straight to this!
Clue, the name is painted on the ship!

Well I'd been going to say it was the Great Eastern ready to be broken up but she had become a cable laying ship and you said Gloria's suggestion of cable laying was wrong. :undecided:

Sorry if I misled you. I thought it was clear. You're in the right area Gloria but not those ships and that was not why it is where it is. it wasn't why it was where it is. Your answer is the correct one. She was scrapped at New Ferry on the River Mersey by Henry Bath & Son Ltd in 1889ā€“1890 and that's where the pic was done.

I've always called them 'Magneto Spanners' or at least that's what I call them after I've found them.

Dead right Ken. They were especially produced for adjusting and maintaining magnetos which now are almost a forgotten technology.
