I hope it isn’t edible.
Is it something that has been Mummified?

Oh Cathy! Later you'll realise what a quandary you have put me in. For a start off it's almost mummified but no great age. It's not edible like dried fish, I can't say more than that. Keep looking and thinking, you are, in a way, on the right track.

Is it another sausage, a very long one wrapped in leaves or cloth and left to `mature'? Those Johnny Foreigners eat some strange things!

Pipe tobacco prior to shredding and cremation.

Well done Ken. It's a ball of pigtail twist.
Cathy, the reason you put me into a quandary was that this was the classic chewing tobacco.

Thank goodness it wasn’t a Snake, that was my next thought.
Reminder... when we sailed to Australia in 1964 , thru the Suez Canal (there was a war happening and the firing was ceased so we could pass thru) one of the places we stopped sold our Dad some food (under pressure) , apparently the adults were told not to buy anything while visiting the ports, but he brought it back to the ship and hid it in wardrobe. Time passed and the smell got so bad that our steward ( a blond Elvis Presley) had to come into the cabin to do investigations into the smell! Embarrassing . In those days Mothers and daughters were put in one cabin, and Fathers and sons were put in another.

Cathy, the mind boggles as to what that could have been.

I have no memory of what Dad may have done, though I do remember Mother saying we mustn’t look out of the porthholes as there were men with guns out there. I didn’t know what guns were (aged four and a half) but I wanted to see the pretty lights.
And the lights I managed to see were ever so pretty...

Just remembered that the twist was also known as lady's pigtail as it was the tobacco favoured by women.
What is it?

Looks like castanets with a handle. So based on that I reckon it's a percussion instrument.

Marilyn, the lights would have been the Rock of Gibraltar. I think we had to get up during the night to see them. 3.00am ?
What I remember is going thru the Suez and seeing soldiers on the side.

Same thing, just a different application - and you can make butter with it in your spare time.
