Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Had a fish finger butty for dinner and tea was sausage, new potatoes and peas with plenty of butter on! I've put some bacon ribs in to boil the salt off them and I'll do something enlightened with them later!

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Not all cooking is successful! Even though I boiled the ribs well and washed them they were so salty they spoiled the rib and beans casserole I made even when I had it with boiled new potatoes for tea! Ah well, you can't win them all.

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Poached eggs on toast, strange how the most simple of meals can be the most delicious. followed by a scone with Jam and clotted cream, sheer luxory.
Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Managed to get a wild rabbit from the butcher yesterday so rabbit stew for us tonight. The farmed rabbits that they sell now don't taste of anything so I stopped buying them. I have high hopes for this one.

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
It'll be all right Liz... Watch out for shot!
I had the last of the salty rib and beans in a butty for dinner, glad to get shut of it! Grilled two pork chops for tea, popped a fried egg on top of each one and enjoyed them.

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
No shot Stanley but still not much flavour; they don't make rabbits like they used to!!
A bit disappointing all in all.

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Hi Liz. I have been shooting and eating rabbits for over 50 years, and have yet to find a tasty one. It is all in the marination and what you put with it. Now its neighbour the Hare is totally different very strong in flavour some times over powering, and leaving a scent on your breath, but the rabbit is still cheap protein. It is imperative that the urine should be removed from a shot rabbit immediately after death, if it is not then the meat will have flavour, then paunching soon after, I always leave the skin on till prior to cooking, because that is the way I was taught.

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Liz, when my mate Ted and I were ferreting for rabbits we always gutted them in the field but left the livers in, a clean liver is a healthy rabbit. (apart from one liver for Winston the ferret, he deserved his reward!)
Home made fish chips and peas for dinner and half of the meat off a blade of lamb for tea in a butty.

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Stanley is correct about the liver, but eat soon after death to enjoy at its best, and another tip always make sure the anal glands are removed whilst paunching, if you don't there will be a reminder while you are cooking the animal very smelly. I was taught that ferrets should not be fed on rabbit it encourages them to capture underground, dine, then go to sleep. This will result in digging out the ferret or its loss. I suffered a classic example of this when a well trained gun dog went out to a river islet to recover a duck, after finding the duck it then sat down and ate it. I have never known this to happen before or since, we put it down to the fact that during the two weeks shooting in scotland we eat what we catch, and I had boiled up various parts of ducks for the dogs meals, and she had acquired a taste.

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Glad he's looking after you Moh. How do you feel now you are back home?
I had a lamb butty at dinnertime and a stewed beef one for tea. I know! It's time I did a bit of proper cooking......

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Pie3 and peas for dinner and a chip butty for tea to use up the last of the bread. By the way, bread is OK now I have adjusted the ingredients. I think the main problem was too much liquid. Put some steak and onions in the oven to cook slowly all night. It will be the base for a stew..... I think I fancy dumplings as well....
Later, after our walk. Spuds and peas in with the steak and onion and we have a pan of stew on a low light on the hob. Not a bad start to Sunday!

Extended the stew with extra spuds and carrots. So stew X 2 again. Still lovely stuff!

Always better the second (and third and fourth) time around. You can't beat a good stew.Stanley wrote:Extended the stew with extra spuds and carrots. So stew X 2 again. Still lovely stuff!

Black pudding with bread and butter, two sets of eyes watched its devourment knowing I would split the skin between them.

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Too right Liz. It bit the dust at teatime yesterday. Haven't made any plans for today but suspect it will be fishy.

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Started yesterday with steak and onion cooking gently. During the day I added spuds, carrots, canned tomatoes, peas and a full cabbage. By afternoon I had an industrial sized stew. Had some for tea and froze seven bowls because the instructions they gave me tell me that if I cook after my operation I shall die......

Fish chips and mushy peas, nearly a tenner for two. The addition of bread and butter and a cup of tea and we have a banquet.

Re: WHAT DID WE HAVE FOR TEA?
Two small butties on bought brown teacakes for dinner (Bread was still hot), one a ham end Kath gave me and the other haslet. (Bread is fine now, perfect loaves. The error was slightly too much liquid) Tea was a haslet and beef loaf butty followed by fresh peach with cream and three very small slices of date and walnut cake for a treat!
