A local council in Wales has added 140 words to the Welsh language as native speakers struggle to adapt to new terminology coined during the pandemic. The list includes ‘cwarantin’ (quarantine),

The coronavirus self-employment income support scheme is translated as

‘Y Cynllun Cymorth Incwm i’r Hunangyflogedig drwy gyfnod Coronafeirws’.

What a wonderful word is Hunangyflogedig'. I do hope the 'Hunan' bit doesn't refer to Hunan province in China. the 'woke will surely deem it racist.

I'll go and do something vaguely useful now.

She may be wrong in her conclusion but she has put her finger on one of the most disturbing aspects of public 'explanation' of scientific matters. BBC have started a good series on R4 at dinner time on misinformation. Think Oil companies and climate research, the tobacco industry and smoking and then go and read 'Magic Mineral or Killer Dust' the story of Turner Brothers and their promotion of asbestos for years when they knew all the dangers.
Current manifestation in the news is 'anti-vaccination'. Just the latest in an oft used ploy.

That Radio 4 series seems intended for the younger generations who are less aware than us oldies about what's gone on in the past. But I'm glad they're doing it, the more exposure the topics get, the better. A few years ago there was an excellent one-off 30 minute programme on Radio 4 about how the big oil and coal companies knew from their own research, even as early as the 1930s, that their activities would lead to serious climate change. They carried on doing such research, `keeping a watching brief', but kept the information to themselves. The programme followed the story up to the 1990s when climate change became more of a public matter. A few weeks later I decided to look up the programme and download a podcast or get it on the Iplayer. No matter how much searching I did I could never find that programme again. Mrs Tiz suggested the companies had managed to suppress it.

A statement will be made tomorrow. I doubt it will be good news.

"Nine in ten planning applications are approved by councils, while more than a million homes given planning permission in the last decade have not yet been built," he said. LINK

What he should have added is that those houses, when they do eventually get started, will be built to standards pertaining at the time permission was given, not the latest standards. An old trick of the developers.

I suppose other in that quote was another (and shorter) way of saying `out of this world'. It's often now used to mean exotic or, in cultural terms, to mean anyone different from yourself.

I think David, that like many other things, grammatical purity can be taken to excess. Split infinitives have never been a problem for me or for that matter Winston Churchill. He is reported as having said:-
"Up with this, I shall not put!"
However, read THIS excellent article that makes sense to me about the 'true' origin.

If we didn't have split infinitives we couldn't have Yoda.

It's fairly safe, whenever some one says 'Churchill said', to reply 'no he didn't' - You'll be right more often than wrong. Same for Einstein.
