Oooh! I know what's going on :-)

You're homing in Peter, yes it's moving quarried marble but for what specific purpose? (That Kev has been Googling again!)

It could be for all sorts of things, from statues to buildings to shopfronts and even for export. We'll need a clue to home in on!

Hanging onto Tizer's Statue statement something worth all this trouble would be the statue of David by Michelangelo
From Wiki.....Link.
A block of marble was provided from a quarry in Carrara, a town in the Apuan Alps in northern Tuscany.

I don't think they took photos of blocks of marble in the early 1500's.

This was a replica reconstruction to show just what it would have been like back then. After all there's a photo of David and they didn't have photography when he made it.

Like Trump I don't ever admit I'm wrong just thinking outside the box. :biggrin2:

You asked for a clue, I think this was between 1933 and 1936 in Italy. What surprised me was the Oxen.

Whatever it is it probably involved Mussolini! And yes, the Italian nation gave Il Duce a present of a marble monolith... `The Largest Marble Monolith In The World (1929)' Video link
See this web page for more details: Mussolini's Obelisk
Wikipedia says: `The monolith was towed to Fiumicino on a pontoon, then it went up along the Tiber towed on the shore by oxen. It was the last major river transport in Rome.'

I lived in Latina for six months in about 1971, and was told that it was 'built by' Benito when he drained the Pontine Marshes. It was said the town centre was laid out in the form of the letter M - in homage to the great man.
No shortage of self esteem there.

I can't see it myself though. .

Quite right Peter, the very same obelisk.
I don't think he was ever short of that in those days David. It worked with Hitler, until he saw through the bluster he was very impressed by Musso's brand of fascism. (As were many in this country.....)
Next for shaving?

That was a good Mystery Object, Stanley, thanks.
Now what and where is this (ignore the background text showing through, which is irrelevant - I'm resorting to copying newspaper pics that I hope won't be found on the web but the over-page text shows through!)

What an untidy and ugly mess, are they drilling for something?

Drilling is not the objective although their may be a borehole drilled for ground source heating as is now being done on many sites.

Preparations for the Millennium Dome site. I was going to say building the pyramids but then realised they didn't have power lines in those days.

Nice try Plaques, but Stanley has got it right first go - well done! A recent photo of the construction site of Hinkley C nuclear power station.

Fortunately I have another photo from the newspaper standing by. Let's see if this lasts any longer. Again, what and where is it?

Can’t think of the name for this, a craze during the 80s where drivers spoke on radios to each other, and had code names.
